Former baseball superstar Darryl Strawberry has been officially pardoned by former U.S. President Donald Trump for his 1995 tax evasion conviction. The announcement was made by the White House on November 7, highlighting Strawberry’s long-standing sobriety and his strong Christian faith as key reasons behind the decision.

Now 63 years old, Strawberry was once an eight-time MLB All-Star and one of the brightest talents of the 1980s, best known for his time with the New York Mets and later with the New York Yankees. But his career, filled with remarkable highs, was also marked by serious personal struggles. Back in 1995, Strawberry pleaded guilty to one count of tax evasion after admitting that he had failed to report more than $350,000 in earnings from autograph signings. He later spent 11 months in a Florida prison in a separate case involving drug possession and solicitation of prostitution.

According to a White House official, Strawberry had already repaid the taxes he owed and completed his sentence long ago. Since then, he has undergone a major transformation—embracing Christianity, staying sober for over a decade, and devoting his life to helping others. He founded a drug recovery center and became an active minister, working to guide people through addiction recovery.

Strawberry shared his emotional reaction on Instagram, expressing deep gratitude toward Trump. He revealed that he received a phone call around 4:37 p.m. on November 6 from a Washington, D.C. number, and to his surprise, it was the former president himself. Trump spoke warmly about Strawberry’s iconic baseball career and then informed him that he was being granted a full pardon.

“This has nothing to do with politics,” Strawberry wrote. “It’s about a man, President Trump, caring deeply for a friend. God used him as a vessel to set me free forever.” He added that the pardon marked the closing of a painful chapter in his life, allowing him to move forward “truly free and clean from all my past.”

During his baseball career, Strawberry achieved legendary status—he was the 1983 National League Rookie of the Year, won three World Series championships, and became a fan favorite for his powerful swing and charismatic presence on the field. Despite his past troubles, his redemption story has inspired many, and this pardon serves as a symbolic full-circle moment.

Trump’s recent wave of clemency actions has drawn attention, with Strawberry’s pardon joining a list that includes former Tennessee House Speaker Glen Casada, his aide Cade Cothren, and Binance founder Changpeng Zhao. Still, for many fans and followers, this moment is less about politics and more about personal transformation—and one man’s chance at complete redemption.
