Ex-Reform UK Leader Nathan Gill Jailed for Pro-Russia Bribery
In a stunning turn of events at the Old Bailey, Nathan Gill, the former leader of Reform UK in Wales, has been sentenced to ten and a half years in prison for accepting bribes to promote pro-Russian agendas. This case has shaken the political landscape, highlighting the risks posed when public trust is betrayed for personal gain.
Gill, 52, a father of seven, admitted to eight counts of bribery, having received at least £40,000 in exchange for giving TV interviews and delivering scripted speeches in the European Parliament in favor of key Russian allies. Between 2014 and 2020, Gill served as a Member of the European Parliament, and he had previously led UKIP in Wales from 2014 to 2016 before briefly leading Reform UK in 2021.
The judge, Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb, described Gill’s actions as “sophisticated offending” and a “grave betrayal” of the electorate’s trust. She noted that the harm caused by his misconduct was profound, damaging public confidence in politicians and undermining the integrity of democratic processes.

Investigations revealed that Gill received instructions from Oleg Voloshyn, a Ukrainian politician with pro-Russian affiliations, and that the money came from Viktor Medvedchuk, a Ukrainian oligarch closely linked to Vladimir Putin. Gill was paid to host Medvedchuk at the European Parliament in Strasbourg in 2019, where Medvedchuk presented a so-called peace plan for Ukraine, which was broadcast on Russian state television. WhatsApp messages later uncovered during the investigation showed that Voloshyn helped script Gill’s speeches and coordinated payments for his public endorsements.
The Metropolitan Police’s counter-terrorism team, which led the investigation due to concerns about national security, stressed that Gill was an “extraordinarily willing participant” and fully aware of whom he was serving. Officers had even stopped him at Manchester Airport in 2021, days before he was due to travel to Moscow for a conference, discovering messages on his phone promising financial rewards. Searches of his home revealed large sums of cash hidden in various denominations.
Reform UK condemned Gill’s actions as “reprehensible, treasonous and unforgivable,” while UK Security Minister Dan Jarvis called it a “betrayal of our country, our people, and our national security.” Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey called for a broader investigation into potential Russian interference in UK politics, emphasizing the seriousness of such breaches.
This sentencing sends a strong message that elected officials will be held accountable for acting on behalf of foreign powers in exchange for money. While Gill will be eligible for release on licence after serving half of his sentence, the wider investigation continues, with authorities working to determine if other individuals were involved.
Nathan Gill, once a prominent figure in the Brexit movement and Welsh politics, has now been removed from public office, his reputation irreparably tarnished, leaving a sobering reminder of the consequences when public service is traded for personal profit.
