Falcons Fall Short in Thriller as Patriots Edge Out 24-23 Victory
What a game it was between the Atlanta Falcons and the New England Patriots — one that truly kept fans on the edge of their seats right until the final whistle. Unfortunately for Atlanta, their late comeback wasn’t quite enough, as they fell just one point short, losing 24-23 in a heartbreaking Week 9 matchup at Gillette Stadium.
The Falcons had their chances. Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. put together a strong performance, tossing three touchdown passes — all of them to Drake London, who had a monster outing with nine catches for 119 yards. It was the first three-touchdown game of London’s young career, and he looked every bit the star Atlanta hoped he’d be when they drafted him.
Early on, things didn’t look great for the Falcons. The Patriots came out firing, with rookie quarterback Drake Maye leading several crisp scoring drives. He connected with DeMario Douglas on a 16-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring, and later found Stefon Diggs for an 11-yard strike. Maye was sharp through much of the first half, racking up 259 passing yards and two touchdowns overall, though a fumble and an interception later in the game gave Atlanta life.

Still, New England stayed a step ahead most of the afternoon. Running back Terrell Jennings added a short touchdown run to extend the lead, while kicker Andy Borregales’ 32-yard field goal in the third quarter helped make it a two-score game.
Then came the drama. Penix, calm under pressure, found London twice more for touchdowns in the second half, including a clutch fourth-down strike with under five minutes to go. It looked like the Falcons had tied the game — but disaster struck when kicker Parker Romo missed the extra point. Instead of leveling the score, Atlanta remained down 24-23.
That missed opportunity proved costly. The Falcons’ defense did its job, forcing a late Patriots punt, but a penalty and some clock management issues left them with little time to work with. When the Patriots converted a critical third down on their final possession, the game was effectively sealed.
Despite the loss, there were positives for Atlanta. Penix showed poise and maturity, finishing with 222 yards and no turnovers. Bijan Robinson was quieter on the ground but made several highlight plays through the air, catching eight passes for 50 yards, including a stunning one-handed grab in the fourth quarter.
For the Patriots, the win pushed them to 7-2 on the season, keeping them atop the AFC East heading into Week 10. For the Falcons, now sitting at 3-5, the road doesn’t get any easier — but if this game proved anything, it’s that they have the fight and fire to hang with anyone. It was a thriller, and though the Falcons came up short, they showed real flashes of promise in defeat.
