Flood Watch Alerted for North Texas Ahead of Monday Morning Storms

Hey everyone, here’s what’s going on with the weather in North Texas right now. A Flood Watch has been issued for areas along and north of Interstate 20, running from Sunday evening through Monday night. This comes as another storm system is moving in, following closely on the heels of a previous Pacific system that already dumped a lot of rain across the region earlier this week.

Meteorologists are warning that the heaviest rain is expected right around Monday morning’s rush hour, so commuters really need to be careful. The general forecast calls for one to two inches of rain over the next day or so, but some isolated spots could see as much as three to four inches. The “bull’s-eye” for the most intense rainfall is along I-20 and areas to the north and east, which means flash flooding is definitely possible, especially on already saturated ground.

Live radar shows showers and thunderstorms moving in as early as Sunday afternoon, but the bulk of the rain is expected late Sunday night, likely after midnight. As the storms move eastward on Monday, they’ll encounter more unstable air and an approaching boundary. This raises the slight risk that a few of these storms could turn strong or even severe, particularly across southern and eastern portions of the region. Large hail isn’t expected to be widespread, but the chance can’t be ruled out entirely.

After Monday, the weather is expected to clear up pretty quickly. By Tuesday afternoon, temperatures should rebound into the 70s, before a strong cold front moves in to deliver seasonably cool and dry air just in time for Thanksgiving. So while the start of the week will be wet and potentially hazardous, the holiday itself looks much more pleasant.

For those tracking the storm live, WFAA’s radar is updating constantly, giving a real-time view of rain and thunderstorms as they sweep through North Texas. Remember, with ground already saturated from earlier rainfall, even a little extra rain can cause flooding issues quickly. So keep an eye on the forecast, plan extra travel time if you have to head out Monday morning, and stay safe out there.

This Flood Watch is your heads-up that North Texas is in for a wet start to the week, but the good news is that clearer skies and milder temperatures are expected to return just in time for the holiday.
