Harrowing Night as Massive Fire Engulfs Hong Fuk Court
What happened today at Hong Fuk Court was truly one of those moments people will remember for years. A five-alarm blaze erupted in the afternoon, and by the time evening arrived, the situation had already escalated into a full-scale community emergency. Multiple temporary shelters were opened, thousands of residents were displaced, and countless families were left in fear, staring helplessly as flames swallowed the place they once called home.
By around 5:30 p.m., community halls and nearby schools were opened as temporary refuge centres. One of the main shelters, CCC Fung Leung Kit Memorial Secondary School, took in around 400 residents. Inside, an emergency registration desk was set up by police, and by that point, they had already recorded around 200 people as temporarily uncontactable. Anyone trying to locate loved ones was urged to call the police hotline.

Many residents were still visibly shaken. One woman, Ms. Hui, said she saw the flames erupt with her own eyes at around 2 p.m. The fire spread incredibly fast—within minutes, she said the entire building seemed to be engulfed. Sparks and burning debris were blown onto neighbouring structures, and evacuation orders were issued soon after. She had no idea where she would sleep tonight, only that she was grateful she managed to get out safely.
Across the temporary shelters, parents clutched their children, elderly residents wrapped themselves in emergency blankets, and neighbours exchanged the same mixture of shock and disbelief. Another resident, Ms. Tong, stood outside the school, watching from afar as her own block was overtaken by flames. She hadn’t even had a chance to retrieve any belongings, but she kept repeating how lucky she felt to have been out of the building when the fire broke out. She also spoke about the heartbreaking news that a firefighter had died in the line of duty, calling the tragedy “truly devastating.”
At the nearby Tung Cheong Street Community Hall, the situation became so packed that police had to put up a “Full” sign. Still, people continued arriving, some carrying only their keys and phones, others still trembling from the shock. More shelter spaces opened throughout the evening, including schools, churches, and community centres, all trying to accommodate residents displaced by the rapidly spreading blaze.
One resident mentioned that she had heard explosions and smelled burning from her balcony well before the evacuation order was given. Police later knocked on doors reminding residents to leave immediately. Many noted that strong winds and ongoing scaffolding works might have contributed to the rapid spread, though nothing has been confirmed.
Tonight, hundreds of families remain unsure when—or if—they’ll return home. Shelters continue to provide food, water, and a place to rest, while rescue teams fight to bring the fire under control. For now, the community waits, hoping for safety, answers, and the dawn of a calmer day.
