High Winds Leave 30,000 Without Power Across Northern Nevada

Hey everyone, here's the latest update from northern Nevada. Early Wednesday morning, nearly 30,000 residents across Washoe County woke up to find themselves without power. NV Energy reported that as of 7:45 a.m., 28,258 customers were still without electricity. The disruption was caused by strong, whipping winds sweeping through the area, creating hazardous conditions for both residents and the local power infrastructure.

A high wind warning is in effect for the Greater Reno-Carson-Minden region as well as Mono County, California, lasting from 1 a.m. until 10 p.m. on Wednesday. Southwest winds are expected to blow steadily at 35 to 45 mph, with gusts reaching up to 65 mph. In areas prone to stronger gusts along U.S. 395, wind speeds could spike to 70 or even 80 mph, while ridgetop gusts may soar past 100 mph. Given these extreme conditions, officials are urging residents to secure any loose outdoor items like patio furniture, trash cans, and holiday decorations, which could easily be swept away by the gusts.

The National Weather Service has also noted that these high winds are accompanied by scattered rain and some high-elevation snow, especially in the Sierra Nevada region. On Lake Tahoe, winds could reach 45 mph, generating waves up to 5 feet and making conditions dangerous for small boats and paddlecraft. Travel is expected to be difficult, particularly for high-profile vehicles, and falling trees or power lines may cause additional hazards.

The good news is that conditions should begin to improve Wednesday night, with calmer weather and clearing skies expected through Thursday. By the weekend, residents can anticipate warmer, more stable conditions, though caution remains necessary until the winds fully subside.

For those affected by outages, NV Energy continues to work on restoring power and advises checking their updates for the latest information on estimated restoration times. So, if you’re in Washoe County or nearby areas, stay safe, keep an eye on your surroundings, and be prepared for lingering gusts through the day.

This powerful windstorm serves as a reminder of how quickly weather can impact our communities, and why taking safety precautions early—like securing loose items and staying informed—is so important. Northern Nevada is now bracing itself as crews work tirelessly to get the lights back on for thousands of residents.
