Holly Wheeler’s Disappearance Sparks a Dark New Mystery in Stranger Things
So, let’s talk about Episode 2 of Stranger Things Season 5 — the one titled “The Vanishing of Holly Wheeler.” Even the name hits hard, especially because it mirrors the first-ever episode of the show. And honestly, this chapter feels like the moment when all the scattered threads of the final season begin to pull together, setting the stage for what Lucas perfectly sums up as “the final battle.”
This episode kicks off with the kind of wild contrast Stranger Things does so well. One moment, you’re hearing ABBA’s “Fernando” echoing through a mundane Hawkins bathroom, and the next, a Demogorgon is bursting onto the scene. The Wheelers — yes, the famously oblivious Karen and Ted — finally get a rude awakening when they come face-to-face with one of Hawkins’ worst nightmares. Karen, who has often been brushed off as a wine-drenched suburban mom, suddenly switches into survival mode. She hides Holly in a bubble bath, grabs a broken wine bottle, and actually goes after the monster. Still, despite her courage, Holly is taken, snatched right through a newly opened gate in the front door.
Moments later, Nancy and Eleven arrive — just a breath too late — and El wastes no time diving straight into the Upside Down after the creature. Back in the real world, the rest of the gang spirals, trying to understand why Holly has become Vecna’s next target and what this disappearance means in the growing war between worlds.

Inside the Upside Down, El quickly finds Hopper. And, in classic Hopper style, he immediately starts lecturing her like an overprotective dad, even though they’re chasing a monster who just abducted a little girl. Meanwhile, Joyce is doing the exact same thing to Will, smothering him with worry when his connection to Vecna might be the key they desperately need.
And then there’s Dustin — showing up with a bloodied face — and Steve absolutely losing it on him. It’s messy, emotional, and very them , but at least it gets them talking honestly about grief, responsibility, and how much they still blame themselves for Eddie.
As the episode unfolds, Mike has a lightbulb moment that probably should’ve come seasons ago: maybe Holly’s “imaginary friend,” Mr. Whatsit, wasn’t so imaginary. After sneaking into Karen’s hospital room with Nancy, they learn that the charming man Holly was talking to was actually Vecna — disguising himself just like Henry did before everything went to hell.
Meanwhile, Will realizes that a disturbing vision he had earlier was from Holly’s point of view, meaning Vecna chose her long before anyone noticed. And deep in the Upside Down, El and Hopper hit a disgusting fleshy wall — the kind that tells you something awful is waiting on the other side.
The final shot? Holly walking through a bright, eerily perfect version of the Creel house, as if Vecna has pulled her into a twisted fantasy world. It looks cheerful, almost magical… which, in Stranger Things , is exactly why it’s terrifying.
And with that, the final battle truly begins.
