Investigation Underway Following Kansas City Police Shooting in Northland

An investigation is currently underway after a police shooting occurred early Sunday morning in the Northland area of Kansas City. The Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) is overseeing the investigation, as is standard procedure when a police officer is involved in a shooting. The incident took place in the 1200 block of NE Parvin Road, near The Retreat at Walnut Creek apartment complex.

The events leading up to the shooting began around 8:30 a.m. when Kansas City police responded to a robbery at a gas station in the 8200 block of North Church Road, close to Missouri Highway 152. The suspect had allegedly threatened a store clerk with a handgun before fleeing the scene before officers arrived. After a brief investigation at the gas station, police were able to identify the suspect and his vehicle.

Around 10 a.m., officers located the suspect's vehicle at the Walnut Creek apartments, where only one Kansas City police officer responded to make contact with the individual. The situation escalated when the suspect reportedly presented a handgun upon interaction with the officer. In response, the officer fired his weapon, striking the suspect. The individual was then transported to a nearby hospital, where he is expected to recover from non-life-threatening injuries. Fortunately, the officer was unharmed in the confrontation.

The MSHP is handling the investigation of the officer-involved shooting, while the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) is responsible for any criminal charges related to the case. Once the investigation is complete, the case will be forwarded to the Clay County Prosecuting Attorney's Office for review.
