Jetstar Brings Bali Flights Back to Avalon After Six-Year Hiatus
Big news for Victorians who love a quick escape to Bali! Jetstar has officially announced that it will launch new international flights from Avalon Airport starting March 2026. This marks the long-awaited return of international travel from Avalon, six years after the airport’s international terminal was shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jetstar will begin by offering five return flights each week between Avalon and Denpasar, Bali. This is a major step in reviving Avalon’s international operations and boosting tourism for both Victoria and Indonesia. Alongside the Bali route, Jetstar is also restarting flights between Avalon and Adelaide, and expanding services to Brisbane. The move signals a strong comeback for Avalon as Victoria’s second major airport.
To make this expansion possible, Avalon Airport is set to invest around $31 million in infrastructure upgrades. The Victorian government will chip in with what’s being described as a “very small” financial contribution to support this growth, along with funding a new public bus route. This new “route 18” bus will connect Lara Station directly to the airport, making it far easier for both passengers and workers to get there without a car.

Avalon Airport’s chief executive, Ari Suss, shared that this milestone could pave the way for more airlines to operate out of Avalon in the near future. He emphasized that it has taken time for the aviation industry to recover from the pandemic, but this announcement shows confidence returning to the sector. Suss also mentioned that the new routes are expected to create between 80 and 100 jobs, in addition to the contractors already working on the expansion.
Premier Jacinta Allan praised the move, saying, “Now arriving: more flights for Avalon and more jobs for Geelong.” The timing couldn’t be better—population growth in the Melbourne–Geelong corridor has been accelerating rapidly, creating stronger demand for air travel options outside of Tullamarine.
While there are no current plans for a rail link to Avalon, Suss noted that it could be an easy addition in the future, given the airport’s proximity to the Melbourne–Geelong rail line. For now, the focus is on improving accessibility through public transport, starting with the new bus service.
Jetstar CEO Stephanie Tully said this expansion would give Victorians more travel choices and support the economic growth of Melbourne, Geelong, and surrounding regions like the Surf Coast and Bellarine Peninsula.
So, if you’ve been missing those Bali sunsets and that first sip of Bintang beer, get ready—Avalon Airport is officially back in the game, and your next island getaway just got a lot more convenient.
