Julian Alvarez Confirms Focus on Atletico Amid Barcelona Transfer Links
There’s been a lot of chatter recently about Julian Alvarez and his future, especially with Barcelona reportedly eyeing him as a potential successor to Robert Lewandowski. But the Argentine striker has been clear in addressing all the speculation: his focus remains firmly on Atletico Madrid for now.
Alvarez, who left Manchester City last summer in search of more consistent playing time, made 31 league appearances in his final season at the Etihad but often found himself on the bench when Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland were fully fit. Despite his importance during City’s historic treble-winning campaign in 2023, the club was open to sanctioning his move, following a pattern seen with other players like Leroy Sane, who was allowed to leave when interest arose from top clubs.
It was Atletico Madrid who ultimately secured Alvarez’s signature, and he has since made a major impact, scoring 38 goals for Los Colchoneros — already surpassing his total output at City. However, with Barcelona reportedly exploring options to replace the aging Lewandowski, Alvarez has inevitably been linked with a move away from Madrid.

When French publication L’Equipe asked Alvarez about the possibility of joining PSG or Barcelona, he was careful to stay diplomatic. “Do I plan on playing at Barcelona or at PSG? Honestly, I don’t know,” he said. “I see what people say on social media. In Spain, people speak a lot about me and Barcelona. For now, I am focused on Atletico and we will review at the end of the season.”
Alvarez also spoke about his decision to join Atletico, praising head coach Diego Simeone. “We share the same vision of football: passion, hard work, dedication, that desire to fight against two immense clubs, to never give up, to always believe. On the pitch, he gives me confidence and grants me total freedom: our relationship is very positive.”
He confirmed that discussions had indeed taken place with PSG before he joined Atletico, but the move never materialized. “When I signed for Atlético, we spoke a lot about Paris. It’s true. There were discussions between the PSG hierarchy and my agent. They showed interest in signing me, but it didn’t happen.”
Meanwhile, Barcelona is now weighing its options as Lewandowski, 37, struggles with injuries and limited game time this season, having made just three league starts and scored four goals so far. With Barcelona five points behind Real Madrid in La Liga, the club is clearly looking for long-term solutions up front, and Alvarez’s name has been floated as a potential target.
For now, Alvarez’s message is clear: he is fully committed to Atletico Madrid, and any decisions about his future will be reviewed at the end of the season. It’s a stance that underscores both his respect for Simeone’s project and his desire to continue thriving in Spain’s capital.
In short, while the transfer rumors may continue, Julian Alvarez has made it evident that Atletico Madrid remains his priority — at least for this season.
