Kindergarten Registration Begins Soon at UGDSB

Kindergarten registration season is almost here for families in the Upper Grand District School Board, and a lot of parents are already gearing up for the 2026–2027 school year. So let’s walk through everything in a simple, conversational way, just as if I’m explaining it to you right now.

Registration officially opens on January 6, 2026 , which is when parents can start pre-registering their children for both Junior Kindergarten (JK) and Senior Kindergarten (SK). For families interested in French Immersion , there’s a specific on-time application window running from January 6 to January 30 at 4:00 p.m. , and that deadline is very important because only applications submitted and confirmed within that timeframe are considered “on-time.”

Now, who’s eligible? For the upcoming school year, children born in 2022 can start Junior Kindergarten , and those born in 2021 can attend Senior Kindergarten . And if your child already went to JK in a UGDSB school this year, there’s no need to re-register them for SK. They’re already set.

The registration process starts online. Parents are encouraged to pre-register using the UGDSB online form, where they’ll also find a school locator tool to confirm which school their child should attend. But submitting the online form isn’t the final step. After that, parents must contact the school directly to book an appointment and complete the in-person documentation process. This step needs to be done before the January 30 deadline, especially for families applying to French Immersion.

When it comes to documents, proof of age is required—things like a birth certificate, passport, or citizenship paperwork. Proof of address is also needed, but only certain documents are accepted, such as utility bills, tax bills, or lease agreements. Driver’s licences and bank statements won’t work here. Families new to Canada will also need to provide immigration or arrival documents. Immunization records don’t go to the school anymore; instead, parents are asked to send them directly to Wellington Dufferin Guelph Public Health.

For those applying to JK French Immersion , there’s an extra step. After pre-registering and meeting with the school, parents will receive an official French Immersion application receipt by email. It must be signed and returned by the January 30 deadline to be counted as on-time. Because placement can depend on available space, some families may be added to a waitlist or offered a spot in another French Immersion school. Transportation isn’t provided for alternate placements or out-of-area requests.

The board encourages parents who need help—whether with registration, translation, or understanding the process—to contact their school or local immigrant services. As always, the goal is to make the transition into kindergarten as smooth and welcoming as possible.

UGDSB says they’re excited to welcome their newest group of young learners for the 2026–2027 school year, and now is the perfect time for families to get ready.
