Matty Matheson’s Powerful Milestone and a Year of Big Changes
So, there’s been a lot of conversation lately around The Bear , and one of its most beloved cast members has just shared something truly meaningful. Matty Matheson — the larger-than-life chef, TV personality, and the man who brings the hilarious, heartfelt character Fak to life — has revealed that he’s officially hit 12 years of sobriety. And the way he announced it felt raw, loud, grateful, and very “Matty.”
On Instagram, he posted in all caps, celebrating “12 YEARS OF CHOOSING NOT TO PICK UP DRUGS AND ALCOHOL,” and that line alone felt like a powerful reminder of how recovery is built one decision at a time. His message was full of emotion, acknowledging that life can be chaotic, beautiful, painful, uplifting — and that feeling all of that is part of being alive. It was expressed with this big, open-hearted energy that he’s known for, almost like he was talking directly to every person who might need to hear it.

He also used the moment to thank the people who’ve held him up along the way: his wife, Trish, and their three kids. He said he loves his family “so freakin much,” and you can almost hear him saying it in that excited, slightly chaotic Matty voice. He talked about how grateful he is to be able to work, to cook, to create, to make people laugh, and to surround himself with others who care about hospitality — not just the food, but the joy and connection behind it.
And then came the pep-talk portion of his message, where he wrote that “EVERYDAY IS A NEW DAY EVERY HOUR IS A NEW LIFE.” It felt like something he wanted to push out into the world — a reminder that recovery isn’t a straight line, but a series of choices, and that there are always rooms and communities ready to support anyone who needs it.
Interestingly, all this comes during a year of big ups and downs for him professionally. Even though he’s thriving on The Bear — and even picked up a SAG Award with the cast in 2024 — one of his restaurant projects recently closed. Bar Clams, his upscale East Coast-inspired diner in Toronto, quietly shut its doors after less than a year. Rising costs and a bit of sticker shock for diners were part of the conversation around it, and the closure was later confirmed by the restaurant group’s operations director.
But even with that setback, Matheson still runs several successful Toronto spots — from Rizzo’s House of Parm to Matty’s Patties and more. So it’s been a year of celebrating milestones, learning from challenges, and continuing to build things that bring people together.
And honestly, that’s very on-brand for Matty: big heart, big energy, big gratitude, and a willingness to keep moving forward, one loud, loving day at a time.
