Middlesbrough Make Bold Move by Appointing Kim Hellberg as Head Coach
Big news from the Championship this week as Middlesbrough have officially appointed Kim Hellberg as their new head coach. The 37-year-old Swede, who has been in charge of Hammarby in Sweden for the past two seasons, will replace Rob Edwards, who recently left Boro to join Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers. This will mark Hellberg’s first managerial role outside of Sweden, though he had previously been linked with Swansea City earlier this month.
Hellberg’s arrival at Teesside has been eagerly anticipated, and he is expected to officially take charge later this week. For now, Adi Viveash will continue as interim manager for Middlesbrough’s home game against Championship leaders Coventry City. The team is currently in second place in the league, trailing Coventry by seven points, having only lost two of their sixteen matches this season.

Hellberg comes to Middlesbrough with a strong track record. During his time at Hammarby, he guided the Stockholm-based club to back-to-back second-place finishes in the Allsvenskan, Sweden’s top flight. His coaching career began in the Swedish lower divisions with Kuddby IF and IF Sylvia, before he joined IFK Norrköping’s coaching staff in 2020. He then took his first Allsvenskan head coach role at IFK Varnamo, producing two impressive seasons that led to his move to Hammarby.
Speaking about the move, Hellberg expressed enthusiasm for the challenge ahead. He highlighted that Middlesbrough’s style of play, their ambition, and the passionate support from the crowd make the club an ideal fit for his approach. “I want us to play quick, aggressive football, win the ball back as quickly as possible, and create a lot of chances,” Hellberg said. He will be joined by his assistant David Selini, with Viveash remaining on the coaching staff to provide continuity.
Boro’s director of football, Kieran Scott, confirmed that Hellberg had been on the club’s radar for some time. “Kim is someone I’ve been monitoring for a while,” Scott explained. “He’s known in European football as an up-and-coming coach who has been doing really well at Hammarby.” The club reportedly paid around £250,000 to release him from his contract in Sweden.
While Hellberg’s name might be relatively unknown to most English fans, his reputation is growing quickly across Europe. His appointment signals Middlesbrough’s clear intent to push for promotion back to the Premier League, and fans will be hoping his energy and tactical approach can continue the momentum that Rob Edwards had started. Hellberg’s journey from Sweden’s lower leagues to the English Championship is a testament to his ambition, and all eyes will be on how he adapts to English football in the coming weeks.
This move also highlights Middlesbrough’s commitment to looking beyond the familiar and taking a calculated risk on a young, emerging managerial talent. With Hellberg at the helm, the Championship just got a little more interesting for Boro fans.
