Monday Morning Freeze Hits Korea Ahead of College Exam Week

Hey everyone, here’s a quick heads-up about the weather this week in Korea. On Monday morning, temperatures are expected to drop sharply, so you’ll definitely want to bundle up before heading out. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, cold air is moving in from the north starting late Sunday night, and by Monday, morning temperatures across the country will fall to between 0 and 11 degrees Celsius. That’s roughly 4 to 8 degrees lower than Sunday, so it’s quite a noticeable chill.

During the day, the highs won’t be much warmer, hovering around 10 to 16 degrees. In major cities, Seoul will see a low of 5 and a high of 11, Incheon 6 to 10, Daejeon 6 to 13, Gwangju 9 to 14, Daegu and Ulsan 7 to 14, and Busan 9 to 16. The cold snap is expected to continue into Tuesday, so early commuters should prepare for frosty mornings, especially inland where temperatures might even dip below zero in some high-altitude areas, causing frost and ice in certain regions.

This chilly period comes just before the annual College Scholastic Ability Test, or “Suneung,” which is one of the most important days for students in Korea. The preliminary exam day on November 12 is expected to have morning lows of 0 to 10 degrees and daytime highs around 14 to 20. On the actual exam day, November 13, temperatures will be a bit higher but still within normal ranges, with morning lows of 2 to 11 degrees and highs of 14 to 19. So while the start of the week will feel quite cold, exam-day conditions should be fairly typical for this time of year.

For those commuting on Monday, especially in central and northern regions, strong winds are expected to make it feel even colder than the thermometer shows. So it’s safe to say that scarves, gloves, and layers will be necessary to stay comfortable. While the cold will ease slightly by midweek, this brief frosty spell is a good reminder that winter is officially on the doorstep.

So if you’re heading out early Monday, plan ahead, dress warmly, and watch out for icy patches in inland areas. The good news is that by the time students sit for the college exams, temperatures will settle back into their usual seasonal range, avoiding any major disruptions from the weather.
