Paige Spiranac Opens Up After Internet Invitational Backlash
Golf influencer Paige Spiranac recently took to Instagram in tears, opening up about the emotional toll that online negativity has taken on her. During the $1 million Internet Invitational, Spiranac was subjected to harsh comments that resurfaced old insecurities, making her feel vulnerable in ways she hadn’t expected. In a series of heartfelt Instagram Story videos, she shared how deeply affected she was by the reaction, describing it as “really hard” to process.
Spiranac posted a screenshot of one particularly vile direct message she received, which included shocking and cruel language, telling her to “go kill yourself” and insulting her character. The messages clearly hit a nerve, and she candidly admitted that she wants to be liked and accepted, especially within the golf community. She explained that social situations have always been challenging for her, particularly in big groups where reading social cues and making friends doesn’t come naturally. “I struggled socially my entire life… in big groups of people, making friends, keeping friends, relating to other people,” she said, reflecting on the lasting impact of these insecurities.

During the Internet Invitational, which was backed by Dave Portnoy and streamed to a wide audience, Spiranac felt a sense of belonging and excitement as she advanced past the opening matchups. Competing for the $1 million prize among 48 content creators brought her joy and a feeling of fitting in that she had long sought. However, seeing the negative reactions online afterward brought those childhood insecurities rushing back, reminding her that acceptance doesn’t always come easily.
Spiranac admitted that the experience made her feel unliked and self-conscious, even though she knows intellectually that there are bigger things in life than seeking approval. “And when I was at the Internet Invitational I felt really good… It was nice to feel that way,” she shared. Yet, watching the reactions later brought back the painful confirmation of her old fears, leaving her feeling rejected and criticized once again.
In a follow-up post, she acknowledged the emotional moment, apologizing for being “emo” but thanking fans for the supportive messages. She humorously noted that her “deep dark insecurities” would be saved for therapy next time, showing her resilience despite the hurt.
The Internet Invitational continues to air over the next two weeks, with three winners splitting the $1 million prize. While the competition is fierce, Spiranac’s openness about her struggles has sparked a broader conversation about mental health and the pressures faced by influencers navigating public scrutiny. Her candid reflections serve as a reminder that behind every social media persona, real emotions and vulnerabilities exist.
