Philadelphia Restaurants Shine at Inaugural Michelin Northeast Ceremony

Philadelphia recently played host to a dazzling celebration of culinary excellence, as the city’s top restaurants were recognized at the first-ever Michelin Guide Northeast Cities Ceremony. Held at the Marion Anderson Hall in the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, the event brought together honorees from five major cities—Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, New York City, and Washington, D.C.—all vying for one of the most prestigious awards in the restaurant industry: the Michelin Star.

Three Philadelphia restaurants emerged as stars of the evening. Her Place Supper Club, Friday Saturday Sunday, and Provenance each earned the coveted Michelin Star, a recognition widely regarded as the pinnacle of culinary achievement. For many in attendance, it was a night of emotion, pride, and shared accomplishment. Chad and Hanna Williams, the duo behind Friday Saturday Sunday, were visibly moved as they spoke about the team that made this achievement possible. “We are only two people, and you know, the team… the team makes it. We’re grateful for all of them,” they shared, reflecting on a journey that exceeded even their wildest dreams.

For Provenance, the honor marked an extraordinary milestone: the restaurant has been open just over a year. Chef Nicholas Bazik, who has been part of Philadelphia’s food scene since he was 18, described the recognition as “everything. It’s amazing,” capturing the sense of validation that comes with such a high-profile accolade. The Michelin inspectors had been visiting Philadelphia in secret for months, evaluating each establishment with meticulous care, and this year’s ceremony marked a unique moment for the Northeast cities to unite in celebrating the remarkable talent across these communities.

The Philadelphia one-star winners each brought something distinctive to the table. Friday Saturday Sunday, led by Chad and Hanna Williams, impresses with a balanced, multicourse menu that showcases both technique and creativity, offering dishes like crispy sweetbreads, quail with pte, and expertly seasoned New York strip. Her Place Supper Club, founded by Amanda Shulman, embodies a warm, communal supper club atmosphere with French and Italian influences, serving multicourse menus that rotate every two weeks. Provenance, under Nicholas Bazik, delivers an elaborate tasting menu where French and Korean inspirations intersect in inventive dishes such as Japanese tuna with whipped tofu and brown butter hollandaise with caviar.

A charming and surprising theme of the night was the role of personal relationships in these culinary successes. Each chef credited their spouse for their inspiration and support. Chad Williams embraced his wife on stage, calling their Michelin Star a dream realized together. Nicholas Bazik pointed to his wife, Eunbin Whang, as the reason Provenance exists, highlighting the importance of love and partnership in the high-pressure restaurant world. Even at Her Place Supper Club, Alex Kemp, Shulman’s co-owner, stepped aside during the awards to ensure Amanda received full recognition.

The ceremony also honored other Philadelphia eateries with Bib Gourmand awards, Michelin Recommended status, and a Michelin Green Star for sustainability. But for many, the night will be remembered for the spotlight it shone on love, teamwork, and devotion—both to the craft of cooking and to those who make it all possible. It was a night where excellence and heart truly met on the same plate.

The city of Philadelphia can now proudly count itself among the Northeast’s culinary heavyweights, with these three Michelin Star-winning restaurants serving as shining examples of innovation, precision, and passion.
