Quebec Braces for First Significant Snowfall of the Season

Quebec is preparing for its first real snowfall of the season, and Environment Canada has issued an official snow warning. Residents should expect snow to begin falling this Sunday, with accumulations varying depending on the region. In Montreal, between 10 and 20 centimeters of snow are forecasted, and there is even a possibility of a brief freezing rain episode. Other areas of the province, particularly north of the Saint Lawrence River, could see 15 to 25 centimeters of snow.

A weather system forming along the U.S. East Coast is expected to move toward Quebec on Sunday and Monday. Regions including Outaouais, Montreal, Montérégie, the Laurentides, Lanaudière, Mauricie, Capitale-Nationale, and Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean have all been included in the warning. Meteorologists note that snow may temporarily turn to rain if temperatures rise slightly above freezing. In Montreal, daytime highs are predicted to hover between -1°C and 1°C, right at the freezing point, which explains why some uncertainty remains regarding exact snow accumulation.

The weather is expected to impact a large portion of the province, bringing the first significant snow accumulations of the season. A short episode of freezing rain could occur in Montreal Sunday evening into early Monday. Eastern Quebec and Estrie are forecasted to experience snow initially, followed by rain, and then another round of snow, creating alternating conditions over several hours.

Travel conditions are expected to become challenging as roads may turn icy and slippery, with visibility reduced at times. Drivers are reminded that winter tires must be installed by December 1, not only for safety but also to avoid fines ranging from $200 to $300.

Despite this early snowfall, meteorologists stress that winter has not fully arrived. Temperatures are expected to fluctuate above and below zero, and these early snowfalls are typical for November. This first snow is being described more as a “warning shot” from nature, rather than the beginning of a continuous winter freeze. Residents are encouraged to prepare by clearing leaves, readying snow shovels, and keeping winter essentials, like brushes and scrapers, in their cars.

In the Greater Toronto Area, the first snow of the season is also expected Sunday. Accumulations will range from 2 to 10 centimeters, with areas further inland, such as Vaughan, Markham, and Brampton, potentially seeing up to 5 centimeters. Daytime temperatures are predicted to reach 1°C, dropping to -5°C overnight. Drivers should anticipate slower travel and increased delays due to winter road conditions. Winter tires, windshield washer fluid, and properly tightened wheel nuts are all recommended precautions.

Experts emphasize that while this snow may not stick around for long or create a “white Christmas,” it serves as a clear signal that winter is approaching. Residents are advised to stay vigilant and prepare for the first signs of the season.
