Racing Mourns the Loss of Young Jockey Tommie Jakes

The world of horse racing has been left heartbroken following the sudden death of apprentice jockey Tommie Jakes , who passed away at the young age of 19. The news, confirmed by the Injured Jockeys Fund and the Professional Jockeys Association, has sent shockwaves throughout the racing community, especially in Newmarket where he lived and trained.

Jakes, a rising star in the sport, was found at his family home near Newmarket early Thursday morning. Police confirmed that the death is not being treated as suspicious , and a file will be prepared for the coroner. Just a day before, he had ridden at Nottingham, partnering the horse Guarantee for trainer Ismail Mohammed. He was even scheduled for two rides at Chelmsford later that same day, which makes his sudden passing all the more devastating.

Over his brief yet promising three-year career, Tommie Jakes had already made an impression on the racing circuit. He recorded 59 winners from 519 rides , with his most recent victory coming on October 18 at Catterick, riding Fouroneohfever for trainer George Boughey. Those who worked alongside him described him as kind, hardworking, and incredibly talented—a young man with his whole career ahead of him.

A joint statement released by the Injured Jockeys Fund and Professional Jockeys Association expressed deep sorrow, saying, “Tommie was a much-loved son and brother, and a popular member of George Boughey’s racing team. His parents, Jeremy and Tonie, ask for privacy at this terrible time.”

Trainer George Boughey paid tribute to the young rider, saying the team was heartbroken: “Tommie wasn’t just a gifted jockey but a genuinely lovely person. His dedication, positivity, and warmth made him a joy to have around. We will miss him more than words can express.”

Others in the racing community shared similar feelings. Trainer Brian Meehan , who had worked closely with Jakes this year, recalled, “He was a lovely lad, always polite and eager to learn. He gave some brilliant rides, including his winning run on Gascony at Epsom. This news is a shock to us all.”

Linda Perratt , who gave Jakes more rides than any other trainer, said she was devastated. “He rode lots of winners for us and was like family. His mum even said I was like his second mother when he stayed with us. He messaged my head girl just last night—we’re all in disbelief.”

Even the British Horseracing Authority’s acting chief executive, Brant Dunshea , shared his condolences, calling Jakes “a talented young rider with the world at his feet.” He added that the BHA and racing’s welfare organizations would be offering full support to those affected.

Tommie Jakes’ passing has left a void in British racing. For someone so young, he had already earned admiration and respect across the sport—not only for his skill in the saddle but for his humble, positive spirit. His memory will live on through the many lives he touched in his short but impactful journey in racing.
