Relative of Karoline Leavitt Taken Into ICE Custody Amid Immigration Crackdown
So here’s what’s unfolding right now — and it’s a story that’s drawing a lot of attention because of its connection to the White House. A woman with family ties to Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has been taken into ICE custody, and the situation has become both legally complicated and emotionally heavy for everyone involved.
The woman at the center of this is Bruna Caroline Ferreira, originally from Brazil. She’s the mother of Leavitt’s nephew, though she and Leavitt haven’t spoken in many years. Ferreira was arrested earlier this month near Boston, and it was shared by federal officials that she had overstayed a tourist visa that required her to leave the country back in 1999. According to the Department of Homeland Security, she also has a previous arrest on suspicion of battery, though how that case ended isn’t clear.

Her attorney, however, has been pushing back hard on how she’s being portrayed. He explained that Ferreira was brought to the United States as a child in the late 1990s and had been a recipient of DACA — the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program — which protects certain undocumented immigrants who arrived as minors. He said she lost her DACA status only because it became harder to renew during the Trump administration’s first attempt to end the program. According to him, she has been in the middle of a lawful process to obtain citizenship and was, in fact, working toward a green card when she was suddenly detained.
Ferreira shares an 11-year-old son with Michael Leavitt, Karoline’s brother. The boy has lived full-time with his father since birth and has not lived with his mother. Michael described the situation as difficult, especially because his son hasn’t spoken to Ferreira since her arrest. His main concern, he said, is keeping life steady for his child.
Right now, Ferreira is being held at the South Louisiana ICE Processing Center while her removal proceedings move forward. Under the current immigration enforcement approach, DHS officials emphasized that anyone in the country unlawfully is subject to deportation, even DACA recipients. They pointed out that DACA does not grant legal status and can be lost for several reasons, including certain criminal accusations.
Meanwhile, Ferreira’s family is trying to support her through a verified GoFundMe campaign. Her sister wrote that Bruna has spent nearly her entire life in the United States and has tried to build a stable, honest life here since arriving as a child.
All of this is happening against the backdrop of intensified immigration enforcement, which has already swept up others with DACA histories. And while the legal case plays out, the human side of the story — especially the separation from her son — is adding a layer of heartbreak to an already complex situation.
