Ruby Wax’s Rocky Jungle Debut Sparks Instant Backlash
It’s amazing how quickly things can turn in the jungle. Only one episode into the new season of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! and Ruby Wax has already managed to stir up enough controversy to make the jungle feel colder than ever. At 71, the comedian arrived with plenty of personality, but the reaction online has been blazing — and not exactly in her favour.
Even before she set foot in camp, Ruby had people talking. Her pre-show hotel was loudly declared “trash,” and she didn’t hesitate to demand a room change. That alone caught attention, but it was her behaviour on-screen that truly tipped viewers over the edge. At one point, she told AngryGinge — also known as Morgan Burtwistle — that he was standing in her light while they waited for their ride. She demanded Lisa Riley’s full attention and even appeared to play dead during her first trial. Each moment added another layer to the “diva” reputation viewers were quick to slap on her.

Social media, of course, erupted. People were already predicting her downfall. Comments like “She hasn’t got a hope of winning this show” and “Voting Ruby for the first trial 100%” flooded in. Others compared her to the iconic but polarizing Lady C, hinting she might become the season’s designated trouble magnet. Only one episode in, and the internet had already cast her as public enemy number one.
The show itself made sure to dial up the drama with sky-high entrances — literally. Helicopters dropped Aitch, Kelly Brook, Eddie Kadi, Shona McGarty, and Martin Kemp onto a beach with parachutes, immediately bonding them as the adrenaline-fuelled team. By comparison, Ruby’s group — including Lisa Riley, AngryGinge, Alex Scott, and Jack Osbourne — had a much more awkward start, shaking hands by the pool and failing to spark any real chemistry.
The early trials didn’t help her case either. Although Ruby was chosen for the first Bushtucker trial alongside AngryGinge, it was her name-dropping — stories about Donald Trump, OJ Simpson, and ’80s fame — that raised eyebrows. Viewers saw it as another rookie error, an attempt to remind everyone of her glory days.
Still, not everything went against her. During the Cockivan trial — essentially a cockroach-filled nightmare — Ruby surprised everyone with a moment of calm under pressure. She even managed to land one of the most memorable lines of the night: “Every crevice has been filled.” It wasn’t enough to erase the backlash completely, but it did show she has some resilience beneath the bravado.
With episode one wrapped, the real tension is just beginning. The show spent so much time on introductions and camp arrivals that the real drama is only now starting to brew. Whether Ruby can turn things around remains to be seen — but one thing’s certain: nobody has made a louder entrance this year than she has.
