Salvesen’s Last-Minute Strike Secures Derby Victory
Derby County pulled off a dramatic 2-1 victory over Hull City at Pride Park on Tuesday, and the headlines were stolen by Lars-Jorgen Salvesen, who scored his first goal of the season in what he described as a “dream” moment. The Norwegian striker, who had been sidelined for six months recovering from knee surgery, came off the bench and converted a rare opportunity, capitalizing on a goalkeeping error by Hull’s Ivor Pandur. With that single touch, Salvesen ensured Derby secured their fourth consecutive win in the Championship, sparking celebrations across the home crowd.
The match started under heavy rain, creating slippery conditions that immediately affected both sides. Hull seemed to have the early advantage when Derby’s Bobby Clark made a misstep in the 13th minute, allowing Matt Crooks to unleash a 20-yard shot that rattled the crossbar. Derby, however, responded strongly, creating several chances, including a well-placed effort from Patrick Agyemang that was deflected behind. It was Carlton Morris, though, who opened the scoring in the 26th minute with a towering header from a Joe Ward cross, giving the Rams an early lead.

Hull responded after the break, showing renewed energy and determination. In the 50th minute, Joel Ndala scored his first senior league goal following a scramble at the back post, leveling the score and ending Hull’s six-game unbeaten run. For a brief period, Hull looked in control, but Derby’s defense held firm against repeated attacks, including a dangerous shot from Regan Slater that was expertly blocked.
The decisive moment came in the 83rd minute when Pandur mishandled a routine clearance. Andi Weimann’s pressure forced the mistake, and Salvesen was on hand to fire the ball into an empty net from outside the area. The goal brought jubilation for Derby, while Pandur was left frustrated on the wet turf. Despite six minutes of added time giving Hull hope, Derby’s defense stood strong to secure the victory.
Salvesen spoke about the significance of his goal, emphasizing how much it meant after a lengthy recovery from injury. “This is what I’ve worked for every day. After being out for six months, that’s the only thing you dream about,” he said. The striker acknowledged that his role had changed due to the excellent form of summer signings like Carlton Morris and Patrick Agyemang but remained determined to make the most of every opportunity.
Manager John Eustace praised his squad’s resilience, highlighting the importance of teamwork and adaptability over a long Championship season. Hull’s boss Sergej Jakirovic expressed disappointment at the late mistake but remained proud of his team’s effort, particularly their improved second-half performance.
With this win, Derby continues to build momentum in the league, while Salvesen’s late strike will be remembered as a perfect story of determination and triumph over adversity.
