Series of Moderate Earthquakes Shake Southern Philippines

A series of moderate earthquakes were reported in the southern Philippines earlier today, sending brief tremors across parts of the Soccsksargen and Davao regions. According to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), a magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck near Glan, Province of Sarangani , at around 12:21 p.m. local time on Monday, November 3, 2025.

The quake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers , which typically makes seismic events more strongly felt on the surface. Despite that, no major damage or injuries have been reported so far. People living close to the epicenter, particularly in Sarangani and nearby towns like Balangonan, Bukid, and Malapatan , experienced light to weak shaking. Residents described feeling a quick jolt, with some minor items shifting or falling off shelves, but authorities have not indicated any structural damage.

Interestingly, this wasn’t the only quake recorded in the region today. Just minutes earlier, at 12:14 p.m. local time , a magnitude 4.9 earthquake was also reported 77 kilometers south of Glan , in roughly the same area. Both quakes were shallow, and while their magnitudes were moderate, they served as a reminder of how seismically active this part of the Philippines is.

Data from other monitoring agencies, including the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) , confirmed the seismic events, with some readings showing magnitudes slightly higher at 5.1 . These variations are common in early reporting, as seismologists review and refine their calculations using additional data.

Communities near General Santos City , which lies about 110 kilometers from the epicenter, may have felt very mild tremors, but most of the region continued daily activities without major disruption. Officials have urged residents to remain cautious and to be prepared for possible aftershocks, even though none of significant magnitude have been reported yet.

The Philippines sits along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a region known for its frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity. These natural events occur due to the movement of tectonic plates beneath the Earth’s surface. While moderate earthquakes like today’s are fairly common, local authorities continue to remind citizens about safety measures — from securing heavy furniture to knowing evacuation routes in case of stronger tremors.

For now, the VolcanoDiscovery monitoring team and local seismic agencies are keeping close watch. Any updates on changes in magnitude or depth will be released as new data comes in. Residents are also encouraged to share their experiences through the Volcanoes & Earthquakes app to help improve real-time reporting and public awareness.

Though today’s quakes caused only mild shaking, they serve as a fresh reminder of nature’s unpredictable power and the importance of preparedness in an earthquake-prone nation like the Philippines.
