Style Shines Through the Storm at the 2025 Melbourne Cup

The Melbourne Cup is known for its glamour, excitement, and high fashion — but this year, it seems the weather might be trying to steal the spotlight. With forecasts predicting a showery top of just 16 degrees, racegoers are being warned to brace for wind, rain, and chilly air at Flemington Racecourse. But let’s be honest — when it comes to Cup Day fashion, style usually wins over practicality.

Despite the gloomy outlook, fashion lovers aren’t backing down. Entrants in the famous Fashions on the Field competition and top designers have decided to simply “ignore the weather” and keep their meticulously planned looks intact. Last year’s best-dressed winner, Emma Scodellaro , summed it up perfectly: “I’m just going to throw a coat over my shoulders and grin and bear it. I’ve planned this outfit all year — I’m not changing it for Melbourne weather.” Her spring-inspired outfit will be on full display, rain or shine.

Another finalist, Layce Vocale , shared the same spirit. “We always have four seasons in one day, so you just have to pick one and commit,” she said, laughing. Her only nod to the unpredictable elements? A clear poncho, so judges can still admire her outfit without interruption. “Not the flimsy ones,” she clarified. “The good, stiff ponchos that actually last the day.”

According to the Bureau of Meteorology’s Angus Hines , racegoers should expect a mix of showers and short bursts of sunshine. “There will probably be some sunshine in there, maybe a couple of hours at a time,” he said. “But that risk of rain is never too far away.” His advice? Keep a poncho or umbrella handy — and maybe even some gumboots in reserve.

Fashion designer Sonia Cappellazzo , who once dressed Princess Diana’s nieces for the Cup Carnival, suggested a more refined way to stay stylish in the rain. “Forget the poncho — unless it’s Chanel,” she joked. “Add a dramatic shawl or an oversized trench coat. You’ve already invested in your look — add a little more drama to match the weather.”

Even the fashion rental world is adjusting. Dress platform The Volte reported a late surge in demand for weather-friendly outfits, with racegoers swapping strapless styles for dresses with sleeves. Yet, minis and midis are still holding their ground.

And while women navigate puddles in stilettos and search for clear umbrellas like Queen Elizabeth’s, men are keeping it simple. Melbourne tailor Dom Bagnato offered this timeless tip: “Just find an umbrella that matches your suit. If it’s black, you’re already halfway there.”

So, whether it’s a drizzle or a downpour, one thing’s certain — the Melbourne Cup will still dazzle. The rain may dampen the lawns, but not the spirits, nor the style, of those determined to make Cup Day their runway.
