Texans Waive Running Back Dameon Pierce Ahead of Bills Clash
The Houston Texans have made a surprising move just ahead of their Week 12 matchup against the Buffalo Bills, waiving running back Dameon Pierce. Pierce, who has been with the team for four seasons, will not be on the field for Thursday night’s game, marking the end of his tenure with the Texans. The decision was part of a roster shake-up, including the signing of rookie cornerback Ajani Carter to the active roster and temporary elevations of safety Jalen Mills and linebacker Jackson Woodard from the practice squad.
Pierce, a 2022 fourth-round pick out of Florida, made an immediate impact as a rookie, rushing for 939 yards and establishing himself as a key playmaker. However, his role diminished over time, and he quickly fell behind other backs on the depth chart, including Nick Chubb, rookie Woody Marks, and pass-catching specialist Dare Ogunbowale. With Joe Mixon sidelined for the entire 2025 season due to a foot and ankle injury, Pierce still struggled to earn meaningful snaps, primarily contributing on special teams when active. This season, he has managed only 10 carries for 26 yards and a touchdown across four games, by far his lowest production since joining the Texans.

His rookie season showed his ability to carry the load, and he capped the 2024 regular season with an impressive 176-yard performance when starters were resting. At just 25 years old, Pierce is still young enough to attract interest from teams in need of depth at running back, making him a likely candidate to be picked up elsewhere before the season concludes.
For the Texans, this move was driven by roster logistics and performance considerations. By creating room for Ajani Carter on the 53-man roster, the team hopes to strengthen its defense while reshaping the backfield with Nick Chubb and Woody Marks leading the way. Coach DeMeco Ryans has signaled confidence in his current quarterback and backfield rotation, but the release of a familiar name like Pierce underscores how competitive roster spots can be in the NFL.
Now entering free agency, Pierce will be looking for a fresh opportunity to showcase his talents. Teams seeking a versatile running back who can contribute both in the rushing game and on special teams may view him as a valuable addition, especially with his history of strong performances when given the chance. While his chapter with the Texans has closed, the next opportunity for Dameon Pierce may be just around the corner, as the NFL landscape often offers late-season surprises.
His time with the Texans may be over, but Pierce’s story is far from finished, and many fans will be watching closely to see where he lands next.
