The Family Stone Returns—A Sequel Filled With Sentiment and Legacy

It looks like Christmas is arriving a little early for fans of The Family Stone , because a long-awaited sequel is officially in the works. And honestly, just hearing that news feels like revisiting a warm, familiar house during the holidays. The update comes directly from Thomas Bezucha, the original writer and director of the 2005 film, who revealed that he’s been quietly working on a follow-up—something he had been contemplating even before Diane Keaton’s recent passing.

Bezucha explained that the process has been a deeply emotional one. While revisiting the story and returning to the Stone family’s home in his imagination, he had already been carrying the feeling of Sybil’s absence. And then, when Diane Keaton passed away last month at the age of 79, it turned that emotional undercurrent into something even heavier. He described it as “a blow on a tender bruise,” and you can feel how important it has become for him to honor not just Sybil as a character, but Keaton herself.

The original movie followed the Stone family during one chaotic Christmas, where affectionate chaos, awkward misunderstandings, and emotional confessions all collided under one roof. It mixed humor and heartbreak in all the right ways, which is exactly why it became a staple holiday watch for so many. Its cast was stacked too—Sarah Jessica Parker, Rachel McAdams, Dermot Mulroney, Luke Wilson, Claire Danes, Craig T. Nelson, and of course, Diane Keaton. Their chemistry is a big part of why the film still holds up two decades later.

That is why Bezucha insisted that a sequel only makes sense if the original cast returns. As he put it, he’s “not interested in the Brady family reunion without the original Jan.” And thankfully, when the idea was floated to the main cast, the response was unanimously positive. No one has officially signed on yet, and the movie hasn’t been greenlit by Disney—who now owns 20th Century Fox—but the wheels are definitely turning. Even Craig T. Nelson and Dermot Mulroney have publicly acknowledged that discussions are happening.

What Bezucha wants now is simple: to do right by a story that means a lot to so many, and to pay tribute to Keaton in a way that feels real and meaningful. The sequel’s script is still being shaped, but the heart of it seems clear. It will be about returning to a family we already know, while honoring the memory of the woman who held that fictional home together.

So, while no release date is on the horizon yet, the idea alone feels like a comforting promise. The Stone family may be gathering once again—and even without Sybil, her presence is already being felt in every step of the journey.
