A devastating accident has occurred on the Bruce Highway, just north of Rockhampton, leaving a young woman and a child dead. The collision involved two trucks at the intersection of Raspberry Creek Road and Kunwarara Road in the Canoona area. Emergency services were called to the scene around 10:40 pm on Wednesday evening, where the severity of the crash quickly became apparent.

Authorities have confirmed that the passengers in one of the trucks, a woman in her 20s and a toddler, died at the scene. The driver of that vehicle, also in his 20s, suffered serious, life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to Rockhampton Hospital. The driver of the second truck, a man in his 30s, sustained only minor injuries and was transported to the same hospital for treatment.

Queensland Fire and Rescue crews were deployed immediately after the collision, as a fire broke out following the impact. The blaze spread to a load of vehicles being carried on one of the trucks and even ignited surrounding grassland. Four urban fire crews and two rural brigades worked through the night to contain the fire, and crews remain on the scene this morning.

The Queensland Police Service has advised that the Bruce Highway in the Canoona area is expected to remain closed for some time while investigations continue. Motorists are being urged to avoid the area and find alternative routes. Police are also seeking assistance from anyone who may have dash-cam footage or information regarding the crash.

Paramedics attended the scene around 5:45 am, and the crash has caused significant delays for southbound traffic. This comes just minutes after another motorcycle collision in inner-Brisbane, where the rider was fortunately taken to hospital in stable condition.
