Trevor Harris: The Ultimate 13th Fan on Grey Cup Weekend

WINNIPEG — Trevor Harris, quarterback for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, has always been a family-oriented individual, and this year’s 112th Grey Cup is a testament to the support system that has stood by him throughout his career. Harris has been named the Most Valuable Player of the Grey Cup, but for him, the real reward is having his family and friends by his side during this monumental moment.

Harris’s pre-game routine always includes a heartfelt message from his younger brother, Cody, who has been Trevor's lifelong workout partner and, aside from his wife, his best friend. “It’s going to mean a lot to me to see him out there in the stands,” Trevor said, reflecting on how much family has shaped his journey. This Grey Cup weekend, Cody, along with other close family members and friends, made the trip to Winnipeg to support Trevor as he led the Roughriders to victory in the biggest game of the year.

The day before the Grey Cup, Cody had sent Trevor an encouraging text, reminding him of how far they’ve come and urging him to stay calm and focused as he took the field. "You’ve earned every inch of this moment," the message read, "Family’s proud no matter what, but, man, we know you’re about to light it up." And light it up he did. With just over a minute remaining in the fourth quarter of the Western Final, the Roughriders were trailing 21-17. But Trevor orchestrated a quick, decisive drive, culminating in a game-winning touchdown pass. It was a moment that would be remembered for generations in Saskatchewan football history.

For the Harris family, football has always been a unifying force. The journey from backyard games to the Grey Cup has been full of sacrifices and triumphs. Trevor’s parents, Tom and Suzanne, have been fixtures at every event, from football games to dance recitals. In fact, Suzanne remarked how blessed the family felt, considering all the places and experiences their hard work and determination had taken them. “From watching backyard football to this, it has been unreal,” she said.

One of the most emotional moments for Trevor came when he reflected on the difficult years his family endured. In 2012, his parents were severely injured in a motorcycle accident, with both sustaining multiple life-threatening injuries. Trevor shared how, at that moment, football seemed insignificant, but his dad’s humorous response — telling him he would make his face “look like mine” if he left football to be with them — helped put things into perspective. The Harris family’s strength and resilience have been a central part of Trevor's success both on and off the field.

Now, as Trevor stands on the Grey Cup stage, his family’s presence means more than ever. His wife, Kalie, and their four children, as well as his parents and extended family, are all there to witness the culmination of a lifetime of hard work. As Trevor prepares to lead his team in the biggest game of the year, it’s clear that his true MVPs aren’t just on the field — they’re in the stands, cheering him on.
