Urgent Deli Meat Recall Sparks Listeria Warning in Australia
So, there’s been an important food safety alert making headlines, and it’s something many people might easily overlook because it involves everyday items from the deli counter. An urgent recall has been issued for several Gotzinger Smallgoods sliced deli meats after concerns were raised about possible listeria contamination. Even though these products were mainly intended for food service and not widely available to the public, the warning has still been taken very seriously — and for good reason.
According to Food Standards Australia New Zealand, the recall covers 1kg packages of sliced silverside, roast beef, 4x4 sandwich ham, champagne ham and provincial ham. These items may have been distributed to various retail outlets and butcher shops across NSW and Queensland. The possibility of listeria monocytogenes contamination prompted this swift action, because this bacteria can lead to listeria infection, which is known to cause severe illness among vulnerable groups.

Listeria is especially dangerous for pregnant women, unborn babies, newborns, seniors, and people with weakened immune systems. Even though healthy adults often experience only mild symptoms — like diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting — the infection can still be extremely risky for others. Symptoms usually appear within about a day of eating contaminated food, and while they may pass on their own in many cases, prompt medical attention is recommended when high-risk individuals are involved.
The recall notice made it very clear: these products should not be eaten under any circumstances. Instead, customers who happen to come across any of the affected deli meats are being told to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. The entire batch of 1kg sliced roast beef has been pulled, and other meats have been recalled depending on specific use-by dates, ranging from mid-December 2025 to late December 2025.
Interestingly, Gotzinger Smallgoods clarified that listeria was detected only in the 1kg sliced roast beef. The rest of the recalled items were included purely as a precaution, following advice from food safety authorities. The company also emphasised that these sliced meats were produced separately from their other product lines, and that public access to them would have been limited. They’ve reassured consumers that distributors moved quickly to remove the products and that no other Gotzinger items are affected.
The company stated that it remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of food safety and is reviewing its processes to prevent anything like this from happening again. This recall also cleared up an earlier error — none of the affected items were sold through Woolworths, despite initial confusion.
Overall, it’s a strong reminder of why food safety alerts matter, even when the affected products seem unlikely to end up in regular shopping baskets.
