Verstappen Seizes Qatar GP Win as F1 Title Battle Heads to Abu Dhabi
What a dramatic twist we’ve seen in the 2025 Formula 1 season! The Qatar Grand Prix delivered an unforgettable showdown that has set up a nail-biting finale in Abu Dhabi. Max Verstappen has taken full advantage of McLaren’s costly strategy errors to claim victory, his seventh of the season and the 70th of his career, tightening the championship fight like never before.
The race began with Oscar Piastri leading from pole position, making a clean and confident start, while Lando Norris settled into fourth after giving Verstappen space into Turn 1. The early safety car, triggered by Nico Hulkenberg spinning off after contact with Pierre Gasly, created the perfect storm for a strategic gamble. McLaren chose to keep both of their drivers out, a decision that ultimately backfired spectacularly. Verstappen, on the other hand, pitted early under the safety car, securing a crucial tyre advantage that allowed him to climb through the field and inherit the lead when McLaren’s stops finally came.

After the race, the Australian admitted he was “speechless” and acknowledged the team didn’t get the call right. Norris, meanwhile, finished fourth, seeing his championship lead shrink from 24 points at the start of the weekend to just 12 over Verstappen. Piastri remains in contention, sitting four points behind Verstappen as the season heads to the final race.
Verstappen’s post-race celebrations reflected the relief and excitement of seizing such an opportunity. He praised the team for making the right strategic call and emphasized that the focus now turns fully to Abu Dhabi, where he aims to claim a fifth consecutive F1 world title. His win demonstrates not just his driving skill, but also how a perfectly timed pit stop under a safety car can change the course of a championship.
Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz of Williams put together a remarkable drive, moving from seventh to finish on the podium in third. Sainz executed a flawless strategy and maintained his position despite some late understeer in the car, securing a second podium of the season and helping Williams to a solid P5 in the Constructors’ Championship. Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli and George Russell also had challenging races, with pit lane delays and traffic costing valuable positions, leaving Antonelli fifth and Russell sixth. Despite the setbacks, both Mercedes drivers showed consistent pace and will be aiming to finish the season strongly.
For McLaren, the Qatar GP was a harsh reminder of how crucial split-second strategic decisions are. Team Principal Andrea Stella admitted it was a “huge disappointment” and emphasized the need to learn from mistakes. With both Norris and Piastri still in title contention, Abu Dhabi promises to be a high-stakes, pressure-filled finale. One thing is certain: the 2025 F1 championship is far from decided, and we’re in for a thrilling conclusion.
