‘Vibe Coding’ Named Collins Dictionary Word of the Year 2025
Have you ever wished you could make your own app or website without learning all the complicated lines of programming code? Well, now there’s a term for exactly that, and it’s been named Collins Dictionary’s Word of the Year for 2025: “vibe coding.” It’s a concept that might sound new, but it’s already shaping the way people interact with technology. Essentially, vibe coding is the process of using artificial intelligence to create programs just by describing what you want them to do, rather than writing the code yourself.
The phrase was coined earlier this year by Andrej Karpathy, the co-founder of OpenAI, who described it as a way for programmers to “forget that the code even exists” and simply “give in to the vibes” when building software. This approach allows anyone, even without prior coding experience, to generate apps by telling an AI something as simple as, “make me a program that schedules my weekly meals.” Of course, more complex applications still need expert skills, and AI isn’t perfect—it can produce errors or buggy results—but the barrier to entry has clearly been lowered.

Collins Dictionary selects its Word of the Year based on usage trends observed in its vast Collins Corpus, which tracks billions of words from social media, news, and other sources. This year, vibe coding stood out for reflecting both the technological and cultural mood of 2025. Alex Beecroft, Managing Director of Collins, said the term “perfectly captures how language is evolving alongside technology” and highlights a major shift in software development where creativity and AI are seamlessly merging.
Vibe coding wasn’t the only tech-focused word on the list. “Clanker” became popular as a playful insult for robots and AI systems, often inspired by Star Wars, while “broligarchy” described the influential tech executives who appeared at Donald Trump’s inauguration. Other words included “biohacking,” “Henry” for high earners not yet rich, “aura farming,” and “micro-retirement,” reflecting the changing ways people work, live, and present themselves online.
The excitement around vibe coding is spilling into the job market too. Big companies are seeking professionals who can “vibe code,” with roles offering salaries as high as $220,000 a year. The skill isn’t about traditional coding or data analysis—it’s about leveraging AI to bring ideas to life quickly and creatively. In fact, many product managers are eager to master it, though less than half currently have the skill.
In short, vibe coding isn’t just a buzzword. It represents a new era where human creativity and machine intelligence combine, making software development more accessible, intuitive, and surprisingly fun.
