What's Open and Closed on Veterans Day 2025
Veterans Day is here, a day dedicated to honoring all those who have served in the United States military. Observed every year on November 11, this federal holiday traces its origins back to 1918, when the armistice ending World War I went into effect at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Originally called Armistice Day, it was renamed Veterans Day in 1956 to recognize veterans of all U.S. wars. Since it is a federal holiday, many Americans naturally wonder what will be open and closed on this day.
First, let’s talk about government offices. Because Veterans Day is a federal and state holiday in nearly every state, most government services are paused. Local Department of Motor Vehicles offices, public schools, and post offices are generally closed. Mail delivery by the U.S. Postal Service is also suspended, except for Priority Mail Express, which continues as usual. However, private delivery services like UPS and FedEx remain operational, though some service adjustments can be expected due to the holiday.

Banking is another area affected by Veterans Day. Most retail bank branches, including major names like Chase, Wells Fargo, and Capital One, are closed. ATMs remain accessible, of course, but standard in-person banking services are unavailable. The Federal Reserve also observes the holiday. Interestingly, despite the closures in banking, U.S. stock markets such as the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq remain open, so trading continues as usual. Bond trading, however, is paused for the day.
For shoppers and diners, there is some good news. Major retailers like Walmart, Target, Home Depot, and Costco will generally remain open, although checking local hours is always recommended. Grocery stores and fast-food chains, including McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Dunkin’, and IHOP, will also be open. In fact, many restaurants offer veterans special deals or free meals in honor of the day, a gesture appreciated by those who have served. Some retail stores and restaurants, including Chipotle, even provide discounts to veterans and active-duty military members.
National parks are open for visitors, although certain services may be impacted if federal staffing is limited. Overall, Veterans Day serves as a reminder not only to pause and honor the bravery and sacrifice of U.S. military personnel but also to plan ahead for which services and businesses will be available. While some closures are unavoidable, the day still provides opportunities to celebrate, shop, and reflect on the contributions of veterans across the country.
