Ace Combat 8 Takes Flight With Stunning Skies and a Bold New Story
Bandai Namco has finally lifted the curtain on one of its most anticipated projects, and the excitement around it has been impossible to miss. The next chapter in the legendary flight-shooter franchise has officially been revealed as Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve , and it made its debut during the 2025 Game Awards with a wave of fanfare. The game is set to launch in 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and it’s already being talked about as one of the series’ most visually ambitious entries.
What’s interesting is how much care seems to have been poured into the visuals this time. Bandai Namco Entertainment CEO Nao Udagawa explained that the team pushed hard on the sky itself—not just as a backdrop, but as a living part of the experience. Each development update reportedly amazed her, with cloud rendering, lighting, and dynamic weather systems being treated almost like characters in their own right. It’s being positioned as a game that doesn’t just play well, but looks and feels like an “epic movie” you’d want to watch on a massive screen.

The story takes us to July 2029, placing the game between the events of Ace Combat 7 and Ace Combat 3 . Players step into the role of a fighter pilot who has been rescued at sea and brought aboard an aging carrier called the Endurance . The Federation of Central Usea has been overwhelmed by a sudden invasion from the Republic of Sotoa, leaving the nation shattered, scattered, and desperately holding on. Amid the chaos, the pilot is assigned a symbolic callsign—“Wings of Theve,” a legendary name that turns out to be nothing more than propaganda meant to inspire hope. And now the responsibility of living up to that myth falls entirely on your shoulders. With three new comrades at your side, the mission is simple but daunting: reclaim your homeland.
To support this vision, Bandai Namco established a dedicated studio called Bandai Namco Aces, giving the franchise team more focus and independence. Udagawa also stressed her broader strategy of speeding up development cycles without compromising quality—something she hopes will get games into players’ hands faster while still delivering the experiences fans expect.
Outside of Ace Combat, Udagawa also gave an update on A24’s Elden Ring movie adaptation, confirming that Hollywood heavyweight Peter Rice has joined director Alex Garland on the project. Development is moving steadily, and while plot details remain tightly guarded, she emphasized that fans will remain the central priority.
All in all, Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is shaping up to be a visually rich, story-driven experience that aims to push the franchise to new heights—literally and figuratively. The sky isn’t just the limit this time; it’s the star of the show.
