Alexander Isak’s Goal Comes at a Cost in Chaotic Liverpool Win at Spurs
So there’s been a lot of talk around Alexander Isak’s injury, and it all came out of one of the most chaotic Premier League games we’ve seen this season. Liverpool managed to cling on to a dramatic 2–1 win away at Tottenham, but the three points came with a worrying downside as Isak was forced off injured moments after making his impact.
The match itself was already bubbling with tension. Tottenham were reduced to ten men in the first half after Xavi Simons was sent off following a VAR review for a late challenge on Virgil van Dijk. It was one of those decisions that split opinion instantly, with Spurs feeling hard done by and Liverpool suddenly handed a clear advantage. Even so, the game never felt comfortable for the visitors, who looked short of ideas before the break.

That changed at half-time when Alexander Isak was brought on as a substitute. Almost immediately, his presence lifted Liverpool’s attack. With just a handful of touches, Isak found the net, calmly finishing a move that finally gave Liverpool control of the match. It should have been a moment of relief and celebration, especially given how important goals have been for him after a stop-start season.
Instead, the focus quickly shifted to concern. As Isak scored, he was caught by a late, scissor-like challenge from Micky van de Ven. The contact looked heavy, and although the goal stood, Isak stayed down for some time. Treatment was given on the pitch, and it became clear that something was wrong. Eventually, he was helped off, appearing to struggle with what looked like an ankle injury. What should have been a confidence-boosting night turned bittersweet in seconds.
Liverpool did go on to extend their lead through Hugo Ekitike, but Spurs refused to fold. Even with nine men by the end, following Cristian Romero’s dismissal in stoppage time, Tottenham pushed relentlessly. Richarlison pulled one back, balls were flashed across the Liverpool box, and Alisson was forced into a late save as Spurs battered the door until the final whistle.
When the dust settled, Liverpool had edged up the table and stretched their unbeaten run, but the bigger question was about Isak. With Mohamed Salah away on international duty, Isak’s fitness suddenly feels crucial. Early signs suggested the injury could keep him sidelined, though the full extent is still being assessed.
For now, Liverpool are left hoping that the damage is not serious. Isak had finally looked sharp and decisive, and losing him at this stage would be a significant blow. In a match full of controversy, red cards, and late drama, his injury may end up being the moment that matters most in the weeks ahead.
