Anger Grows as Royal Mail Delivers Post Only Every Few Weeks in Hawkinge
There’s growing frustration right now in the village of Hawkinge, where residents say Royal Mail deliveries have slowed to such an extent that post is only turning up once every couple of weeks, often dumped through letterboxes in thick bundles. What’s being described isn’t a minor delay or the odd missed day, but a pattern that has been going on for months and appears to be getting worse.
One resident, 62-year-old Alie Haywood, has spoken out after repeatedly receiving large stacks of letters all at once, instead of regular daily deliveries. Important documents have been caught up in these delays, including medical letters, driving paperwork, pension details, and bills. On one occasion, 17 letters arrived in a single delivery, followed by nearly two weeks of nothing, before another 16 letters suddenly appeared. Some of that post had been dated weeks earlier.

The impact hasn’t just been inconvenient, it’s been stressful. Medical letters asking for follow-up contact were delivered days late, which is naturally worrying. Financial documents have also been delayed, creating uncertainty over whether sensitive mail has simply been held back or potentially gone missing. In one case, a replacement business debit card was requested, but weeks later, it still hadn’t arrived.
The disruption has even affected livelihoods. Mrs Haywood’s husband, Daniel, a taxi driver, had to temporarily stop working because essential car paperwork didn’t arrive on time. On top of that, personal moments were missed too, with birthday cards from family failing to show up when they mattered most.
What’s striking is that these experiences aren’t isolated. After the issue was raised in a local Facebook group, many neighbours shared similar stories. Some spoke about fines arriving too late to pay at a reduced rate, others mentioned birthday cards turning up days after celebrations had passed. A few residents even joked that parcels from overseas were arriving faster than letters sent within the UK.
That said, not everyone in Hawkinge has been affected. Some residents report that their post arrives as normal, with praise given to postal workers who are said to be putting in long hours. Mrs Haywood herself has been clear that she doesn’t blame postmen and women on the ground. Instead, responsibility is being placed firmly on Royal Mail management, with calls for better planning, especially during the predictable Christmas rush.
Royal Mail has responded by saying the vast majority of mail is being delivered on time and that seasonal volumes more than double in December. Where disruption does occur, it’s been said that efforts are being made to resolve it as quickly as possible. Still, for those waiting nearly two weeks between deliveries, reassurance alone hasn’t been enough, and the anger shows no sign of fading.
