Anne Hathaway Ignites the Screen in A24’s Bold New FilmMother Mary

So, the first trailer for Mother Mary has finally dropped, and it’s already sending waves through the film and music world. This is A24 leaning fully into a bold, stylized pop epic, with Anne Hathaway stepping into the role of a superstar whose life, image, and identity start to unravel right in front of us. What we get from the trailer is a story that feels glamorous on the surface but emotionally raw underneath, almost like watching fame itself come undone in slow motion.

Hathaway plays a global pop icon—larger-than-life, idolized, and carefully manufactured—who hits a breaking point mid-tour. An existential crisis forces her off the stage and back into the orbit of someone she once trusted deeply: Sam Anselm, the fashion designer who helped build her visual persona. Sam is played by Michaela Coel, and the tension between them is immediate. Their relationship feels strained, complicated, and charged with years of unspoken history. The film has been described as a “psychosexual pop thriller,” and that dynamic is felt instantly in the trailer’s mood.

Directed and written by David Lowery, the filmmaker behind The Green Knight and A Ghost Story , the movie carries his signature mix of dreamlike visuals and emotional intensity. Lowery himself has called Mother Mary a “weird, weird film,” one that pulled inspiration from Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula and the chaotic energy of Apocalypse Now. He’s hinted that the film will provoke strong reactions, and it definitely looks like he isn’t exaggerating.

Another huge part of why this movie is already gaining so much attention is the music. Original songs have been created by Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff, and FKA twigs—three of the most influential names in today’s pop and experimental music scenes. Hathaway performs the songs herself, fully immersing in the role. FKA twigs also appears in the film alongside Hunter Schafer, Jessica Brown Findlay, Kaia Gerber, and more, adding to an already standout cast.

Hathaway mentioned in a Vogue interview that taking on this role required her to let go of her instincts and embrace the uncomfortable process of “becoming material” for Lowery to shape. Coel praised the physical and emotional commitment Hathaway brought, especially during scenes that demanded enormous vulnerability.

With its striking visuals, haunting music, and an intense character-driven story, Mother Mary is shaping up to be one of A24’s most ambitious releases yet. The film hits theaters in April 2026, and if this first trailer is any indication, it’s going to spark a lot of conversation—maybe even some controversy—when it arrives.
