Are Shops Open on Boxing Day 2025? What You Need to Know Before Heading Out
It’s officially Boxing Day 2025, and for a lot of people, the big question this morning is simple: are the shops actually open? After all the Christmas celebrations, many of us start thinking about popping out for a few essentials, or maybe even taking advantage of some post-Christmas sales. But as has become the norm over recent years, a bit of planning is definitely needed before stepping out the door.
Opening times across supermarkets and high street stores have been revised once again for the festive period. Many retailers closed early on Christmas Eve, stayed shut on Christmas Day, and now, on December 26, are reopening with reduced hours. Boxing Day has long been linked with bargain hunting and busy high streets, and it was once considered the biggest shopping day of the year. However, things have shifted since the pandemic, when several major retailers chose to close on Boxing Day to give staff a well-earned break. While some brands have kept that tradition going, others have gradually returned to opening their doors, just not for a full day.

The good news is that more shops are open than closed this year. Many supermarkets are welcoming customers back, although most are running shorter hours than usual. Lidl stores are generally open from late morning until early evening, while Asda, Morrisons, and Sainsbury’s are also operating on reduced daytime schedules. Tesco is a bit different this year, as most large superstores are closed, but Tesco Express locations are open for limited hours. Iceland stands out by remaining open around the clock in many locations, making it a handy option for last-minute essentials.
On the high street, several popular retailers have reopened. Stores like B&M and Primark are welcoming shoppers back early in the morning, while fashion and home retailers such as New Look, River Island, and Dunelm are also trading with shorter opening windows. That means Boxing Day shopping is very much happening, just at a slower pace than in years gone by.
That said, not everything is open. Some major names have chosen to stay closed again this year. Marks & Spencer and Waitrose supermarkets are not trading on Boxing Day, and a number of well-known high street stores, including John Lewis, IKEA, Home Bargains, Wickes, Next, and The Range, are keeping their doors shut. For these retailers, in-store sales are expected to kick off a day later, on December 27.
Overall, if you’re heading out today, it’s best to double-check local opening times to avoid disappointment. Boxing Day shopping is still very much alive, but it’s happening on a more relaxed, limited-hours basis.
