Berube’s Bold Lineup Call Sparks Leafs Fan Backlash Before Stars Clash
Going into the matchup against the Dallas Stars, a major storyline has already taken center stage for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and it has nothing to do with goals or goaltending. Instead, it’s a bold lineup decision by head coach Craig Berube that has set off a wave of debate and frustration among Leafs fans, especially online.
The biggest surprise was the decision to scratch rookie forward Easton Cowan. Just a night earlier, Cowan had been trusted with a spot on the top line and even picked up an assist in Toronto’s 5–3 loss to the Nashville Predators. For a 20-year-old still finding his footing in the NHL, that kind of opportunity usually signals confidence from the coaching staff. So when reports emerged that Cowan would be watching from the press box against Dallas, the reaction was immediate and intense.

Berube explained that the move was about giving Cowan a reset. It was said that a game off could help him watch, learn, and manage the grind, especially during a back-to-back stretch that young players aren’t always used to. From the coach’s perspective, this was framed as load management rather than punishment. It was also noted that puck management and physical play had slipped a bit in the previous game, which factored into the decision.
Along with Cowan, Calle Jarnkrok was also taken out of the lineup. In their place, Max Domi and Steven Lorentz were brought back in. Domi, in particular, was expected to slot right back into the role Cowan had occupied, adding experience and edge as the Leafs faced a well-rested Stars team while playing their third game in four nights.
Still, that explanation didn’t sit well with much of the fanbase. On social media, frustration was clearly expressed. Many fans pointed out that Cowan had been one of the more consistent players during a tough stretch for Toronto, posting two goals and four points over his last ten games. For a team searching for sparks, benching a young player who appeared to be gaining momentum felt counterproductive to many observers.
What made the decision even more confusing to fans was the timing. Cowan had just been elevated up the lineup, which usually suggests trust and long-term opportunity. To go from the top line to a healthy scratch overnight was viewed as mixed messaging, even if the intention was development-focused.
For now, it has been indicated that the scratch is temporary, and Cowan could be back as soon as the next game against Pittsburgh. But heading into the Stars matchup, the damage was already done in the court of public opinion. Whether Berube’s tough-love approach pays off or continues to draw criticism will depend on how the Leafs respond on the ice—and how quickly Cowan gets his chance again.
