Big Bash League Returns as Australia’s T20 Summer Heats Up Again
The Big Bash League is back once again, and the 2025–26 season is set to deliver another fast-paced chapter in Australia’s summer of cricket. Now entering its 15th edition, the men’s Big Bash League begins on Sunday, coming straight after the conclusion of the women’s competition the day before. As has become tradition, the tournament will run alongside Australia’s home Test summer, adding to an already packed cricket calendar, and it will continue until 25 January.
This season has been structured around 44 matches in total. Out of these, 40 games will be played during the group stage, followed by four knockout matches that will ultimately decide the champions. Eight familiar teams will once again take part, representing cities across Australia. These include the Adelaide Strikers, Brisbane Heat, Hobart Hurricanes, Melbourne Renegades, Melbourne Stars, Perth Scorchers, Sydney Sixers, and Sydney Thunder.

The Hobart Hurricanes will be entering the tournament as defending champions, having lifted the trophy last season after a convincing seven-wicket win over Sydney Thunder in the final. Their title defence is expected to add extra intrigue, especially with several teams eager to reclaim dominance in one of the world’s most competitive T20 leagues.
During the group stage, each team will face every other side twice. This format has been designed to ensure fairness and consistency, while also giving fans plenty of opportunities to watch rivalries develop. Once the group phase is completed, the top four teams on the table will progress to the knockout stage.
The knockout format has been clearly mapped out. The top two teams will meet in the Qualifier on 20 January, with the winner earning a direct spot in the final. Meanwhile, the teams finishing third and fourth will clash in the Knockout match on 21 January, where elimination will be immediate for the losing side. The Challenger match, scheduled for 23 January, will then be played between the loser of the Qualifier and the winner of the Knockout. Finally, everything will come down to the Final on 25 January, where the winner of the Qualifier will face the winner of the Challenger to decide the champion.
All knockout matches are scheduled to begin at 08:15 GMT, allowing fans around the world to follow the action live. For listeners, selected matches will also be available through BBC Sounds, ensuring coverage beyond the television screen.
As the Big Bash League returns, expectations are high for explosive batting, dramatic finishes, and emerging stars. With a clear format, strong teams, and the pressure of a short, intense tournament, the 2025–26 season is shaping up to be another thrilling ride for cricket fans everywhere.
