Buium Shines in Canucks' Win Over Devils in Debut

In an impressive debut, Zeev Buium made an immediate impact with a goal and an assist, helping the Vancouver Canucks edge out the New Jersey Devils 2-1 at the Prudential Center on Sunday. This game marked a significant moment for the Canucks, as they played their first match without defenseman Quinn Hughes, who had been traded to the Minnesota Wild just days before. The trade had sent Buium, along with forwards Marco Rossi and Liam Ohgren, to Vancouver in exchange for Hughes and a first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.

Buium wasted no time in proving his worth, as he played a pivotal role in the Canucks' victory. After Jake DeBrusk opened the scoring early in the first period, Buium doubled the lead with a power-play goal at 6:48. His shot from the left face-off circle deflected off Brenden Dillon's stick and found the back of the net, putting Vancouver up 2-0. Buium’s contribution was a sign of things to come, as he showcased his ability to create scoring opportunities and make an impact in key situations.

Rossi and Ohgren also made their Canucks debuts in this game, with Rossi returning from an injury that had kept him sidelined since November 11. He registered one shot on goal in 18:16 of ice time, while Ohgren also managed a shot on goal in 11:39 of play. Though neither was able to score, their presence was felt as they adjusted to their new team dynamics.

Despite the Canucks’ strong start, the Devils weren’t going to back down easily. After several close calls, including a crucial penalty kill in the first period where Vancouver denied New Jersey on a 5-on-3 advantage, the Devils managed to cut the deficit to 2-1. Luke Hughes scored for New Jersey at 4:02 of the second period with a wrist shot from the high slot, assisted by Jesper Bratt.

However, despite the Devils’ relentless pressure, especially in the third period where they outshot Vancouver 8-1, the Canucks held firm. Goaltender Thatcher Demko was a key figure in the victory, making 25 saves, including a few crucial stops during New Jersey's power plays.

This win was a much-needed boost for the Canucks, who had been struggling with a 2-5-1 record over their last eight games. With the victory, they improved to 12-17-3 on the season, while the Devils, despite a strong effort, dropped to 18-14-1. It was a game full of debuts and drama, but ultimately, Buium’s standout performance, along with Demko’s solid netminding, helped the Canucks edge out the Devils for a well-deserved 2-1 win.
