BWI Airport Disruption Brings Traffic Chaos and Temporary Shutdown
If you were anywhere near BWI-Marshall Airport on Friday afternoon, it was probably a stressful and confusing experience. What started as a routine travel day quickly turned into a major disruption, as traffic was brought to a standstill and parts of the airport were temporarily shut down during a law enforcement investigation.
Here’s what happened. Around mid-afternoon, K-9 officers alerted authorities to a suspicious package located between Concourses D and E. As protocol requires, the situation was treated seriously. Both the upper and lower levels of the airport were shut down while emergency procedures were put into place. As a result, inbound terminal roadways were closed, and Security Checkpoint D/E was temporarily suspended.
With traffic completely blocked, frustration built quickly. Cars were backed up along the airport loop, and some travelers were left with no choice but to abandon their vehicles. People were seen unloading luggage in the middle of the roadway and running toward the terminal just to avoid missing flights. It was one of those rare moments where airport chaos played out in full view, and patience wore thin fast.

At the same time, MTA Light Rail service to the airport was suspended, adding another layer of inconvenience for travelers relying on public transportation. Fire trucks and emergency vehicles were seen responding on the tarmac around 3:40 p.m., which only heightened concern for those watching from a distance.
The airport later confirmed through a public statement that the screening suspension and road closures were part of an ongoing law enforcement investigation. For more than an hour, travelers were left waiting with little clarity on how long the disruption would last.
Just before 4 p.m., some relief finally arrived. The emergency response was cleared, the suspicious package was determined to be safe, and the inbound roadways were reopened. Shortly after, passengers were once again allowed full access to the terminals, and normal airport operations began to resume.
Even though the immediate threat was resolved, the impact lingered. Because the shutdown lasted over an hour, many flights were delayed, and some schedules were thrown completely off track. Travelers were advised to check their flight statuses for delays or cancellations before heading out.
By early evening, BWI-Marshall Airport was officially back open, but the incident served as a reminder of how quickly travel plans can change. While the investigation ended safely, the disruption left a lasting impression on passengers who found themselves caught in an unexpected airport standstill.
