Cameron Green Shatters IPL Auction Record with Massive KKR Deal

The IPL auction for the 2026 season has delivered one of its biggest headline moments yet, and this time, it belongs to Australia’s Cameron Green. In a dramatic bidding war that kept fans and analysts glued, Green was snapped up by the Kolkata Knight Riders for a staggering £2.06 million, making him the most expensive overseas player in IPL history.

The auction room buzzed with tension as Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings went head-to-head, both clearly desperate to secure a proven overseas all-rounder. In the end, it was Kolkata who held their nerve and landed the 26-year-old, adding another blockbuster name to their squad. With this deal, Green also became the third most expensive player ever in IPL history, trailing only Indian stars Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer.

What makes this story even more remarkable is the timing. Green received news of his record-breaking contract while preparing for the third Ashes Test against England, a reminder of how modern cricketers juggle international duties alongside franchise commitments. It was a moment that underlined just how highly he is valued in the shortest format of the game.

Despite missing the entire 2025 IPL season due to back surgery, Green’s reputation clearly remained intact. His IPL numbers speak for themselves. In 29 matches, he has averaged over 41 with the bat, striking at an impressive rate of more than 150. His ability to clear the ropes, combined with his knack for contributing with the ball, has made him one of the most complete all-rounders available. Sixteen wickets may not jump off the page, but his versatility and match-winning potential have clearly convinced franchises of his worth.

Kolkata’s interest was hardly surprising. Green had previously enjoyed a sensational season with Mumbai Indians in 2024, scoring 452 runs at an average above 50 and striking at over 160. Performances like that were always going to push his value sky-high, especially for teams looking to balance power-hitting with seam bowling options.

This deal also eclipsed the previous overseas record held by Mitchell Starc, another Australian fast bowler who was bought by Kolkata for the 2024 season. Interestingly, Starc is not part of this year’s auction, having already been retained, along with several other Australian Test regulars.

However, not everyone would be celebrating. With only 31 overseas slots available and 110 foreign players listed, the harsh reality of the IPL auction was once again on display. For Cameron Green, though, this auction will be remembered as a career-defining moment, one that confirms his status as one of the most coveted players in world T20 cricket.
