Chaos Erupts at Mordialloc as Teens Clash with Police on Busy Beach

What was meant to be a regular summer afternoon in Melbourne’s bayside quickly spiralled into chaos, as wild scenes unfolded in Mordialloc involving hundreds of teenagers, a stormed supermarket, and a tense confrontation with riot police on the beach. It all began around mid-afternoon, when social media videos showed large groups of youths pouring into the local Woolworths store, overwhelming staff and shoppers almost instantly.

Shelves were stripped, items were hurled down aisles, and staff were left massively outnumbered as the crowd surged through the supermarket. The situation escalated so rapidly that the store was forced into lockdown shortly after 4pm, as safety became the top priority. Despite the destruction inside the store, it was later confirmed that no Woolworths staff or customers were injured during the incident.

After leaving the supermarket, the group, said by police to number more than 100 people, moved toward nearby Mordialloc beach and the pier. That’s where things became even more volatile. Police were called in to deal with what had turned into a hostile crowd, and Public Order Response Team officers in riot gear were deployed to the scene. Videos circulating online showed officers surrounded by teenagers who were throwing bottles and other objects, filming the confrontation, and gesturing aggressively toward police.

In one particularly confronting clip, an officer was seen using OC spray before forcing a teenager to the ground, as others looked on and continued recording. Despite the intensity of the scenes, police later confirmed there were no serious injuries reported and no weapons detected during the unrest.

Authorities said officers acted quickly to disperse the crowd, and while most teenagers eventually left the area, one teenage boy was arrested at the beach. He remains in custody and is expected to be interviewed in relation to affray and assaulting police. Investigations into both the supermarket incident and the beach clash are now being handled by detectives from the Moorabbin Crime Investigation Unit.

The incident has once again highlighted growing concerns about safety for retail workers across Victoria. Recent crime statistics revealed retail staff are facing an offence every five minutes, prompting renewed calls from retailers for stronger protections, including dedicated police taskforces and tougher exclusion measures for repeat offenders.

For residents and beachgoers in Mordialloc, the scenes were shocking and unsettling, turning a popular summer hotspot into the centre of a major police response in just a matter of hours.
