Cooler Northeasterly Winds Bring Rain Chances as Weather Shifts This Week
Let me walk you through what’s going on with the weather, because things are clearly starting to change, and the next several days will feel quite different across Taiwan.
First, looking back at yesterday, temperatures were still on the warm side. Many areas saw daytime highs between 27 and 31 degrees Celsius, with central and southern regions feeling almost summer-like during the afternoon. Even early this morning, although a weak cold air mass moved south, overnight cooling was limited because radiative cooling wasn’t very strong. As a result, the lowest temperatures across most lowland areas stayed around 13 to 16 degrees, which is cool but not sharply cold.
However, the weather pattern today has already begun to shift. Northeasterly winds are now influencing the island, and moisture on the windward side has been increasing. This is why cloud cover has thickened over northeastern Taiwan, including parts of Greater Taipei and Yilan, where short bursts of rain have already been observed. Hualien has also seen a few light showers. Meanwhile, central and southern regions have been far less affected, with clearer skies overall, although fog has formed in some areas during the early morning hours.

Temperature-wise, the north feels noticeably cooler, while central and southern Taiwan remain relatively comfortable during the day, even slightly warm under the sun. Mornings and evenings, though, are definitely on the cooler side everywhere.
Looking ahead to tomorrow and Saturday, moisture from the south is expected to move northward. High and mid-level clouds will gradually spread over Taiwan, increasing the chance of brief, localized rainfall. Mountain areas and the eastern half of the island are more likely to see light rain, while other regions may only experience occasional drizzles. Overall, daytime conditions should feel comfortable, but early mornings and nights will stay slightly cool.
The bigger change arrives starting Sunday. Another wave of northeasterly monsoon-strength cold air is forecast to move in. This will bring cooler temperatures to northern Taiwan and increase rain chances again along the north and east coasts. Early next week, the air mass is expected to dry out temporarily, allowing clouds to break and rainfall to ease, especially in central and southern regions.
By midweek, yet another cold air system is being monitored. While it currently appears to be at a similar northeasterly monsoon level, its exact strength is still uncertain and will need close observation.
In short, the warm days are fading, layers will be needed more often, and umbrellas should stay within reach as Taiwan settles into a more typical winter pattern.
