Dangerous Snowstorm Threatens NYC and the Northeast This Holiday Weekend
A powerful winter storm is making its way across the Northeast, and it’s expected to bring New York City the heaviest snow in nearly four years. Travel after Christmas is being severely impacted, with roads turning icy and flights disrupted. As of Friday morning, nearly 800 flights have already been canceled, particularly affecting New York City’s three major airports as well as Detroit Metro Airport.
The storm initially hit the Midwest, leaving Wisconsin and Michigan coated in a layer of ice. Drivers in these states are being urged to exercise extreme caution, as road conditions remain treacherous. By Friday morning, the freezing rain is moving eastward into Pennsylvania, covering the state throughout the day and creating extremely hazardous driving conditions. An ice storm warning has been issued for nearly one million residents in western Pennsylvania.

On the northern edge of the storm, where temperatures are cold enough for snow instead of ice, heavy snowfall is expected. This includes parts of New York, eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, western Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. The snow will begin in western New York on Friday morning and is forecast to reach New York City by 5 p.m. Heavy snow at times will significantly reduce visibility, making travel risky for anyone on the roads. The snowfall is expected to continue overnight, tapering off in the city around 9 a.m. Saturday.
In New York City, about 7 inches of snow are expected, which would be the most significant accumulation in nearly four years. Upstate New York could see six to nine inches, with the Hudson Valley possibly receiving up to ten inches. Northern New Jersey is forecasted to get five to eight inches, while Hartford, Connecticut, may see around four inches. Philadelphia is expected to receive a mix of sleet and snow, totaling one to three inches, along with a glaze of ice that will make Friday night travel especially difficult. Baltimore is also preparing for icy road conditions.
The tri-state region remains under a winter storm warning, and authorities are urging residents to prepare for challenging travel conditions. With snow and ice covering major roads and airports struggling with cancellations, the storm is shaping up to make this holiday weekend particularly dangerous for travelers across the Northeast.
Stay safe if you are heading out, and make sure to monitor weather updates closely, as conditions can change rapidly in a storm of this magnitude.
