His performance against the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night was a perfect example of why this decision is now being viewed as Darche’s most important one of the offseason. Early in the game, Rittich was under constant pressure. New Jersey came out flying, throwing chance after chance at him in the opening period. Still, 14 of 15 shots were turned aside, and the Islanders were kept within reach when the game could have easily slipped away.
As the night went on, the saves only got bigger. A clean breakaway by Jack Hughes in the second period was shut down cold, a moment that felt like a turning point. In the third, with the game tied and tension rising, Rittich denied Connor Brown at the crease and then immediately stopped Luke Hughes, even after losing a skate blade. His focus never wavered.
The response inside UBS Arena said it all. Chants of “Rittich” poured down from the stands, and afterward, his teammates rewarded him with the Iron Man mask for the eighth time this season. Head coach Patrick Roy summed it up best, praising Rittich’s fight, energy, and ability to make the saves that matter most, especially when momentum starts to shift.
