Deadly Blue-Ringed Octopus Sighting Sparks Safety Alert at Emu Point
There’s been a serious safety warning issued in Albany after a blue-ringed octopus, one of the ocean’s most venomous creatures, was spotted near Emu Point, and it’s definitely something locals and visitors need to take seriously right now. The sighting was reported on Tuesday, prompting the City of Albany to quickly alert beachgoers and anyone spending time along the shoreline to be extra cautious.
What’s especially concerning is that sightings weren’t limited to the water alone. On the same day, a local man named Simon Williams shared a photo on Facebook showing a dead blue-ringed octopus that had ended up on the carpet of his boat. He later said he felt incredibly lucky that he’d been paying attention and had shoes on at the time, because even contact with a dead blue-ringed octopus can be dangerous.

In its public warning, the City of Albany reminded everyone just how risky these tiny creatures can be. Although blue-ringed octopuses are small and often look harmless, their bite can be life-threatening. To make matters worse, the bite may not cause immediate pain, which means someone might not realize they’ve been bitten until serious symptoms begin to appear. That’s part of what makes these animals so dangerous.
It was also explained that blue-ringed octopuses tend to hide in places people might casually touch. Rock crevices, empty shells, and bits of debris like discarded cans or bottles are common shelter spots for them. Because of this, beachgoers were urged to be extremely careful when turning over rocks in shallow water or handling shells, especially around popular coastal areas.
This latest incident isn’t an isolated one. Blue-ringed octopuses have been spotted in Albany waters before, including at Emu Point, Quaranup Beach, Nanarup Beach, and Rushy Point. They’ve even been found in crab nets and cray pots pulled up from King George Sound and Princess Royal Harbour. After the warning was shared online, locals were quick to comment and post photos of previous sightings, particularly around the rock groyne at Emu Point.
The message from the City of Albany is clear and simple: keep your eyes open, stay well away from any blue-ringed octopus you might see, and report the sighting rather than trying to handle it. A moment of curiosity could turn into a life-threatening situation, and right now, caution is being strongly advised along Albany’s beaches.
