Edmonton Police Warn Public About Man Targeting Women on Dating Sites

Police have issued a public warning about a man who has been allegedly harassing and threatening women he meets through online dating and escort platforms. The Edmonton Police Service is treating this seriously, and they’re urging the community to be alert because investigators believe there may be more victims who haven’t yet come forward.
According to police, the man at the centre of these allegations is 36-year-old Matthew Edward Williams, who also uses the name Matthew Galpin. The situation reportedly began back in 2022, when a woman matched with him on Tinder. After they exchanged numbers, things took a sharp turn. What started as normal communication quickly shifted into harassment. When she blocked him, the behaviour reportedly escalated—he began contacting her using multiple different phone numbers, making it difficult for her to fully cut off contact.

For a while, the harassment stopped. But in 2025, it allegedly started again. This time, the woman was contacted on LeoList, where the accused reportedly used a fake name and photo to conceal his identity. Police say he even arranged a date using this false profile, and when she refused to continue with the interaction, he escalated once more—this time to uttering threats.
On November 14, 2025, the Edmonton Police Service obtained warrants for Williams for uttering threats to cause bodily harm and for criminal harassment. What makes the situation even more concerning is that he is already bound by two release orders related to similar investigations in Calgary and British Columbia, involving previous accusations of threats and assault.
Police are issuing this public alert because they believe Williams is actively targeting women on dating apps as well as women advertising as sex workers on escort sites. They’ve emphasized that he is known to use fake identities—different names, different photos—which makes him difficult to recognize online. That’s why they’re encouraging anyone who has had contact with him, or who may have experienced similar behaviour, to report it.
Investigators strongly believe there are more complainants out there who haven’t yet reached out. Anyone with information or anyone who believes they may have been targeted is asked to contact the Edmonton Police Service. Even information about his current whereabouts could help the investigation.
This warning is really about ensuring public safety and making sure people know what to watch for, especially those who use online platforms to meet new people. It’s a reminder that while dating apps and escort sites can be useful tools, they also require caution—and reporting suspicious or harmful behaviour can play an important role in protecting others as well.
