There’s some exciting buzz right now around Emilia Clarke, and it’s all tied to her upcoming espionage series PONIES, which is shaping up to be a gripping Cold War thriller. Best known worldwide for her role in Game of Thrones, Clarke is taking on something very different this time, and honestly, it sounds like a fascinating shift in her career.

PONIES, which stands for “persons of no interest” in intelligence terminology, is set in Moscow in 1977, right at the height of Cold War tension. The story follows two American women who initially seem invisible in the world of espionage. They work quietly as secretaries at the American Embassy, overlooked and underestimated. But everything changes when their husbands are killed under suspicious circumstances in the Soviet Union. What begins as grief slowly turns into determination, and these women are drawn into the dangerous world of intelligence and covert operations.

Emilia Clarke plays Bea, a highly educated woman who speaks fluent Russian and is the daughter of Soviet immigrants. Her background places her in a unique position to navigate the political and cultural complexities of Moscow. Alongside her is Twila, played by Haley Lu Richardson, a tough and fearless small-town woman who brings raw courage and grit to the partnership. Together, they are pushed into CIA work, not by ambition, but by a need to uncover the truth behind their husbands’ deaths. As the story unfolds, a much larger Cold War conspiracy is slowly revealed, pulling them deeper into danger.

The series has been co-created by Susanna Fogel and David Iserson, both known for sharp writing and strong character-driven stories. Fogel is also serving as director and executive producer, while Iserson is the showrunner. Emilia Clarke herself is wearing multiple hats here, as she is also on board as an executive producer, which suggests this project is particularly close to her heart.

PONIES is an eight-episode series, with each episode running about an hour, allowing the story plenty of space to breathe and build tension. The show is scheduled to premiere in January 2026 on Peacock internationally, and for Indian viewers, it will be available via the Peacock hub on JioHotstar.
