FDA Flags 19 Cookware Products for Dangerous Lead Leaching
So, there’s a pretty serious warning out right now from the FDA, and it’s something that could affect a lot of households without people even realizing it. The agency has identified 19 different cookware products that may be leaching lead into food, and consumers are being urged to check their kitchens and throw these items away immediately. And the FDA is very clear about this: don’t donate them, don’t refurbish them, just get rid of them.
This alert expands on an earlier warning the FDA issued back in August, but now the list has grown, with nine more products added after further testing. Most of these items were manufactured outside the U.S., particularly in India, and they’re made from materials like aluminum, aluminum alloys, and brass. Those metals were tested by the FDA and several state agencies, and the results showed that they can release unsafe levels of lead during cooking.

The thing is, any amount of lead exposure is considered unsafe. Even very low levels can create real health risks. Lead poisoning can trigger symptoms like abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, memory issues, and even tingling sensations in the hands or feet. Children are especially vulnerable because lead can affect their brain development, slow their growth, and harm their nervous systems. Women who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding are also at higher risk.
The FDA says that anyone who thinks they may have been exposed should reach out to their healthcare provider, just to be safe.
Now, the list of products is pretty detailed, and it includes a mix of pots, pans, kadais, degdas, and brass topes—items commonly used in South Asian cooking. These were sold by different retailers across states like California, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, and others, although the FDA didn’t specify whether the distribution was broader. They also noted that more products could be added later, depending on what further testing reveals.
Some of the names on the list include the Sonex aluminum pot, IKM aluminum saucepans and brass pots, Brass tope from Kraftwares, several Silver Horse cookware items, a Dolphin brand aluminum saucepan, Royal Kitchen milk pans, Tiger White kadai, and a variety of aluminum kadais from different distributors. In other words, it’s a pretty wide mix of everyday cookware that people may already be using without knowing the risks.
The FDA is also calling on retailers and distributors to reach out if they have concerns about the safety of products they currently sell. For now, the main message is simple: check your cookware, compare it with the list, and if there’s a match, dispose of it right away. This is one of those situations where a quick kitchen sweep could genuinely protect your health.
