Fire at Iconic Dove and Olive Pub Brings Surry Hills Light Rail to a Halt
There’s been a tense afternoon in Sydney’s inner south after a fire broke out at the well-known Dove and Olive pub in Surry Hills, causing disruption not just for patrons but also for commuters relying on the city’s light rail network. What started as a routine weekday quickly turned into an emergency response scene, with smoke visible and services temporarily suspended.
The incident unfolded shortly after 1.30pm on Tuesday when emergency services were called to the heritage-listed pub on Devonshire Street. Smoke was seen billowing from the roof area, drawing immediate attention from people in the neighbourhood. Videos shared online showed firefighters arriving quickly, with smoke rising from what appeared to be a rooftop shed or plant room that had been scorched.

Because the pub sits right alongside the light rail corridor, safety concerns meant services on the Randwick and Kingsford lines had to be stopped. Trams were not running between Central Station and Moore Park for a period, which caused delays and frustration for commuters during the busy afternoon hours. The shutdown, however, was described as precautionary, with authorities focused on ensuring there was no risk to passengers or staff.
Fire and Rescue NSW confirmed that crews worked swiftly to contain the blaze. It was later explained that the fire was believed to have started in a storage area or plant room within the building. Thankfully, the situation was brought under control relatively quickly. The fire was extinguished, and no injuries were reported, which was a major relief given the location and time of day.
After the flames were put out, firefighters remained on site to carry out further checks. Efforts were made to ensure the fire had not spread into concealed areas of the building, and the pub was cleared of toxic smoke. Traffic around the area was impacted while these safety checks continued, but authorities indicated that services would be restored as soon as it was safe to do so.
By shortly after 3pm, light rail services began running again, although at a reduced frequency. This gradual return was part of a cautious approach to reopening the line while the scene was fully secured. As of now, the exact cause of the fire and the extent of the damage to the Dove and Olive remain unclear and are expected to be investigated.
For locals, the incident served as a reminder of how quickly everyday life can be disrupted, especially in tightly packed inner-city areas. While the disruption was inconvenient, the quick response from emergency crews and the absence of injuries meant the situation could have ended far worse than it did.
